Jesus came not to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets, but rather to fulfill their purpose. This important teaching helps us understand how to view and apply the Old Testament today.
What Did Jesus Come to Do?
Jesus had two key purposes regarding the law:
- To perfectly fulfill and obey all 613 commands of the Mosaic law.
- To fulfill the prophecies written about the coming Messiah.
Does God’s Law Change or Disappear?
While God’s timeless principles remain constant, their expression can change between the Old and New Covenants. For example:
- The principle of atonement for sin remains, but shifts from animal sacrifices to Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice.
- Physical circumcision is no longer required, but spiritual “circumcision of the heart” continues.
How Should We View the Old Testament Today?
The Old Testament remains valuable for Christians in several ways:
- It provides the foundation for understanding God’s story and character.
- It should be read through Christ-centered lenses.
- It contains timeless moral principles that still apply.
- It enhances worship and provides wisdom for daily living.
Why Can’t We Earn Righteousness Through the Law?
Jesus taught that even perfect law-keeping isn’t enough – our righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees. This shows us:
- We cannot meet God’s perfect standard through our own effort.
- We need Christ’s righteousness credited to us through faith.
- The law serves as a “tutor” to show our need for a Savior.
Life Application
This week, consider:
- How do you view the Old Testament? Do you tend to ignore it or struggle to find its relevance?
- In what ways are you trying to earn God’s favor through your own righteousness rather than relying on Christ’s?
- What timeless principles from the Old Testament can you apply to your life today?
Challenge: Choose one Old Testament passage to study this week. Read it through “Christ-centered lenses” and identify both the timeless principles and how Jesus fulfills their meaning.
