How to Use This Commentary
Revelation 5 continues the heavenly throne room scene and reveals the central figure of all history: Jesus Christ, the Lamb who is worthy.
Read it in four movements: (1) the sealed scroll (vv.1–4), (2) the worthy Lamb (vv.5–7), (3) the song of redemption (vv.8–10), and (4) the worship of heaven and earth (vv.11–14).
Key: Jesus alone is worthy to redeem creation, judge evil, and reign forever.
History is filled with people who tried to rule the world.
Kings…
emperors…
dictators…
presidents…
military conquerors…
Every generation produces someone convinced they can fix humanity—or control it.
But Revelation 5 reminds us:
there is only One worthy to rule creation.
Heaven searches for someone worthy to take the scroll.
No angel steps forward.
No apostle.
No king.
No religious leader.
👉 No one is worthy.
Until heaven announces:
The Lion has overcome.
Yet when John turns—
he does not see a lion.
He sees:
a Lamb standing as though slain.
👉 The Lion conquered by becoming the Lamb.
A Quick Look: Revelation 5:1–14
Big idea: Jesus Christ alone is worthy to open the scroll because He conquered through His sacrificial death.
Why this matters: History is not controlled by evil, governments, or Satan—Christ is the rightful King.
Key truth: The Lamb who was slain is also the Lion who reigns.
Bottom line: Jesus alone is worthy of worship because He alone redeems and rules creation.

A Deeper Dive: The Worthy Lamb
1) The Scroll in God’s Hand
John sees a scroll sealed with seven seals in the right hand of God (Revelation 5:1).
This scroll represents God’s plan to judge evil, reclaim creation, and establish Christ’s kingdom.
👉 It is both a scroll of judgment and a scroll of redemption.
The world has been corrupted by sin and ruled by rebellious powers.
But God’s plan to restore creation is ready to unfold.
2) The Search for Someone Worthy
A mighty angel asks:
“Who is worthy to open the scroll?”
Silence follows.
👉 No angel is worthy.
No human ruler is worthy.
No religious leader is worthy.
John begins to weep because it appears no one can reverse the curse of sin and death.
His tears represent humanity’s longing for redemption, justice, restoration, and hope.
3) The Lion of Judah
One of the elders tells John:
“Stop weeping. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has overcome.”
Jesus is the promised King from the line of David (Genesis 49:8–10; Isaiah 11:1–10).
👉 He is the true King humanity has always needed.
He conquered:
- sin
- death
- Satan
But when John turns expecting a lion—
he sees a Lamb.
4) The Lamb Standing as Slain
This is one of the most powerful images in Revelation.
👉 The victorious Lion appears as a sacrificed Lamb.
Jesus conquered not through political power or military force,
but through His sacrificial death on the cross.
Yet the Lamb is standing.
👉 He was slain—
but He lives.
Revelation constantly reminds believers that resurrection follows sacrifice and victory follows suffering.
5) The Worthiness of Christ
Jesus alone is worthy because of:
- Who He is → the Messiah and Son of David
- What He has done → died for sinners
- What He accomplished → defeated sin and Satan
👉 Worthiness belongs to Christ alone.
Revelation destroys every illusion that humanity can save itself.
6) Redemption for Every Nation
Heaven sings:
“You purchased people for God from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”
👉 The gospel is global.
Christ did not die merely for one ethnicity or nation.
He redeemed people from all over the earth.
Revelation does not picture heaven as culturally empty.
It pictures redeemed diversity centered on Christ.
7) The Worship of Heaven
Worship expands outward:
- the living creatures worship
- the elders worship
- millions of angels worship
- all creation worships
👉 Heaven erupts because the rightful King has stepped forward.
Jesus receives the same worship as the Father because Jesus is fully divine.
8) Creation’s Longing Fulfilled
Revelation 5 fulfills the longing of all creation.
Humanity longs for:
- justice
- peace
- restoration
- evil to end
👉 Revelation declares that those hopes are fulfilled only through Christ.
The Lamb is about to reclaim what belongs to Him.
- The scroll contains God’s plan for redemption and judgment
- No created being is worthy to redeem creation
- Jesus is the Lion of Judah and the promised King
- The Lion conquered by becoming the Lamb
- Christ defeated sin, death, and Satan through the cross
- The gospel is for every tribe, language, and nation
- All heaven worships the Lamb because He alone is worthy
- Jesus is the rightful ruler of creation
Bottom Line (Revelation 5:1–14)
The Lamb who was slain is the Lion who reigns—and Jesus alone is worthy to redeem creation, judge evil, and receive eternal worship.
