How to Use This Commentary
Revelation 12:7–12 reveals the war in heaven between Satan and the holy angels and explains why the final years of the Tribulation become so intense.
Read it in three movements: (1) the battle in heaven (vv.7–8), (2) Satan’s expulsion and defeat (v.9), and (3) heaven’s celebration and earth’s warning (vv.10–12).
Key: Satan is powerful and dangerous, but he is ultimately a defeated enemy whose time is running out.
Popular culture often portrays Satan in strange and unbiblical ways.
Some imagine him as a cartoon villain with horns and a pitchfork ruling over hell.
Others dismiss him entirely as a myth or symbol of evil.
But Revelation 12 presents something far more serious.
👉 Satan is not fictional.
He is a real spiritual enemy actively opposing God, deceiving the world, and attacking God’s people.
Yet this passage also reminds believers of something incredibly important:
Satan is not equal to God.
He is not sovereign.
He is not unstoppable.
In Revelation 12,
the great dragon is cast out of heaven,
his accusations are silenced,
and heaven celebrates because his defeat is certain.
This passage reminds believers:
- spiritual warfare is real
- Satan actively deceives the world
- Christ has already secured victory at the cross
- God’s people overcome through Christ
- Satan’s time is limited
A Quick Look: Revelation 12:7–12
Big idea: Satan is cast out of heaven and his ultimate defeat becomes certain.
Why this matters: Believers face spiritual warfare, but Christ has already secured victory over Satan.
Key truth: Satan accuses and deceives, but believers overcome through the blood of Christ and faithful endurance.
Bottom line: Satan’s rage increases because his time is short, but Christ’s kingdom and victory are absolutely certain.
A Simple Explanation (Revelation 12:7–12)
“There was war in heaven…” (vv.7–8)
Michael and the holy angels fight against Satan and his demons.
Meaning: Spiritual warfare extends into the unseen heavenly realm.
Application: Believers should recognize the reality of spiritual warfare.
“The great dragon was thrown down…” (v.9)
Satan and his demons are expelled from heaven.
Meaning: Satan’s authority and access are being progressively removed.
Application: Satan is powerful, but he is ultimately defeated.
“The accuser of our brethren…” (v.10)
Satan constantly accuses believers before God.
Meaning: Satan seeks to condemn and discourage God’s people.
Application: Believers stand secure because of Christ’s finished work.
“They overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb…” (v.11)
Believers overcome through Christ’s sacrifice and faithful witness.
Meaning: Victory comes through Jesus, not human strength.
Application: Christians overcome by trusting Christ and remaining faithful.
“The devil… has only a short time” (v.12)
Satan’s fury increases because he knows judgment is near.
Meaning: Evil intensifies as history moves toward Christ’s return.
Application: Believers can endure because Satan’s defeat is certain.
A Deeper Dive: Satan Cast Out of Heaven
1) War in Heaven
Revelation 12:7 begins with a startling statement:
“There was war in heaven.”
👉 Scripture reveals that spiritual conflict exists beyond the visible world.
The Bible repeatedly teaches that believers live within a larger unseen spiritual conflict.
Paul described this reality in Ephesians 6:
- rulers
- authorities
- spiritual forces of wickedness
Revelation 12 pulls back the curtain and shows this conflict directly.
2) Michael the Archangel
Michael appears leading the holy angels against Satan.
Michael is one of the few angels specifically named in Scripture.
👉 Throughout the Bible,
Michael consistently appears as a defender of God’s people.
In Daniel,
Michael protects Israel.
In Jude,
Michael disputes with Satan over Moses’ body.
Here in Revelation,
Michael leads heaven’s armies against the dragon and his demons.
3) Satan Is Not Equal to God
Revelation reminds readers of an important theological truth:
👉 Satan is not God’s equal opposite.
Satan is:
- created
- limited
- dependent
- already defeated through Christ
Though powerful,
he remains fully under God’s sovereign authority.
The battle is never uncertain from God’s perspective.
4) Satan’s Current Access to Heaven
One surprising detail in Revelation 12 is that Satan still has some access to heaven before this event.
Scripture elsewhere shows Satan appearing before God:
- in Job 1–2
- in Zechariah 3
👉 Satan currently functions as an accuser before God’s throne.
Revelation 12 describes the moment when that access finally ends permanently.
Satan and his demons are expelled from heaven forever.
5) Satan’s Defeat Is Complete
Verse 8 says:
“They were not strong enough.”
👉 Satan cannot ultimately withstand God’s power.
The dragon loses decisively.
Heaven is fully cleansed of Satan’s presence and accusations.
This defeat marks another major stage in Satan’s downfall:
- his original fall
- his defeat at the cross
- his expulsion from heaven
- his future imprisonment
- his eternal judgment in the lake of fire
6) Four Names for Satan
Revelation 12:9 piles up multiple names for the dragon:
- dragon
- serpent of old
- devil
- Satan
👉 Each name highlights a different aspect of his character.
Dragon emphasizes destruction and terror.
Serpent of old connects him to Eden and deception.
Devil means slanderer or false accuser.
Satan means adversary.
Revelation leaves no doubt about the identity of humanity’s great spiritual enemy.
7) Satan the Deceiver
Revelation says Satan:
“deceives the whole world.”
👉 Deception is one of Satan’s primary weapons.
From Genesis onward,
Satan twists truth,
distorts God’s character,
and leads people away from God.
Scripture repeatedly warns believers:
- false teaching exists
- spiritual deception is real
- the world system opposes God
- Satan disguises himself as an angel of light
Revelation shows this deception reaching its climax during the Tribulation.
8) Heaven Celebrates
After Satan’s expulsion,
heaven erupts in celebration.
👉 Heaven rejoices because Satan’s accusations are finally silenced.
The heavenly voices celebrate:
- salvation
- God’s power
- God’s kingdom
- Christ’s authority
Satan’s removal signals that Christ’s kingdom victory is drawing near.
9) The Accuser of the Brethren
Satan is called:
“the accuser of our brethren.”
👉 Satan continually seeks to condemn God’s people.
He points to:
- sin
- failure
- weakness
- guilt
But Revelation reminds believers that Satan’s accusations ultimately fail because of Christ.
Romans 8 asks:
“Who will bring a charge against God’s elect?”
The answer:
no accusation can stand against those justified through Christ.
10) How Believers Overcome Satan
Revelation 12:11 is one of the most important spiritual warfare verses in Scripture.
Believers overcome Satan:
- through the blood of the Lamb
- through the word of their testimony
- through faithful endurance
👉 Victory comes through Christ’s finished work,
not human strength or mystical techniques.
Revelation does not portray believers defeating Satan through rituals,
formulas,
or dramatic displays.
Instead,
they overcome by:
- trusting Christ’s atonement
- holding firmly to truth
- remaining faithful even under persecution
11) Faithful Unto Death
Revelation says believers:
“did not love their life even when faced with death.”
👉 Genuine faith remains faithful even under intense suffering.
Many believers during the Tribulation will face martyrdom.
Yet Revelation repeatedly emphasizes perseverance and endurance.
Their willingness to suffer for Christ demonstrates the reality of their faith.
12) Rejoicing in Heaven — Woe on Earth
Heaven rejoices,
but earth receives a warning:
“Woe to the earth and the sea.”
👉 Satan’s expulsion means intensified rage upon the earth.
Knowing his time is short,
Satan unleashes furious persecution during the final years of the Tribulation.
Revelation explains why the last half of the Tribulation becomes so severe:
- Satan knows judgment is near
- his opportunities are ending
- his fury intensifies
13) Satan’s Time Is Limited
One of the most comforting truths in the passage appears in verse 12:
“He has only a short time.”
👉 Evil has an expiration date.
Satan’s power is temporary.
His rebellion is temporary.
His deception is temporary.
Christ’s kingdom alone is eternal.
Revelation assures believers that history is moving toward:
- Christ’s return
- Satan’s defeat
- the establishment of God’s kingdom
- the removal of evil forever
- Revelation 12 reveals a final war in heaven
- Michael leads the holy angels against Satan
- Satan is powerful but not equal to God
- Satan currently functions as an accuser
- Satan and his demons are permanently expelled from heaven
- The dragon, serpent, devil, and Satan all refer to the same enemy
- Satan continually deceives the world
- Heaven celebrates Satan’s defeat
- Believers overcome through Christ’s blood and faithful endurance
- Satan’s wrath intensifies because his time is short
- Christ’s victory and kingdom are absolutely certain
Bottom Line (Revelation 12:7–12)
Satan is a real and dangerous enemy, but through the blood of Jesus Christ believers stand secure, overcome faithfully, and rest in the certainty that Satan’s final defeat is coming.
