The Martyrs’ Great Reward (Revelation 20:1–6)
John begins with a vision of Satan’s binding. An angel seizes the dragon—the devil, Satan, the ancient serpent—and casts him into the Abyss, locking and sealing it for a thousand years. The purpose is to stop his deception of the nations. Debate surrounds whether these thousand years are symbolic (as amillennialists hold) or literal (as premillennialists teach). Either way, the text emphasizes God’s sovereign power over Satan and his temporary restraint before final judgment.
John then sees thrones and those given authority to judge. He identifies the souls of martyrs—those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and refusal to worship the beast. Though they lost their lives on earth, they live and reign with Christ for a thousand years. This “first resurrection” highlights their special reward. The second death—eternal separation from God—has no power over them. Instead, they serve as priests of God and reign with Christ.
The emphasis is not on the length of the millennium but on the honor God bestows on His faithful witnesses. Their temporary loss on earth turns into an eternal reward in heaven.
The Devil’s Final Doom (Revelation 20:7–10)
After the thousand years, Satan is released for a short time. True to his nature, he deceives the nations again and gathers them for one last battle against God’s people. They march across the earth, surrounding the camp of the saints and the beloved city. Yet just as quickly, fire falls from heaven and consumes them.
Finally, Satan is thrown into the lake of fire, where the beast and the false prophet already are. There, he will be tormented day and night forever. Evil has no more future. The one who deceived humanity from Eden onward is condemned eternally.
The Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11–15)
John then sees the final scene of history: the great white throne and Christ seated as Judge. Earth and sky flee away, signaling the end of the old order. All the dead, great and small, stand before Him. Books are opened, recording every deed, and another book—the Book of Life—is opened.
Each person is judged according to what they had done. Those whose names are not written in the Book of Life are thrown into the lake of fire. This is the “second death.” Death itself and Hades are also cast into the lake of fire, showing that even death is defeated forever.
The righteous, whose names are in the Book of Life, inherit eternal life. The wicked face eternal separation from God. The Judge is perfect, His verdict final, and His justice complete.
