Revelation 20:1-10: Christ’s Earthly Kingdom

How to Use This Commentary

Revelation 20:1–10 describes the thousand-year reign of Christ, the binding of Satan, the reign of the saints, Satan’s final rebellion, and his ultimate defeat.

Read this passage in four major movements: (1) the binding of Satan (vv.1–3), (2) the reign of Christ and His saints (vv.4–6), (3) Satan’s release and final deception (vv.7–9), and (4) Satan’s eternal judgment (v.10).

Revelation 20 reminds believers that history is moving toward the visible reign of Jesus Christ and the final defeat of Satan.

Key: Jesus Christ will reign victoriously over the earth, His people will reign with Him, and Satan’s rebellion will finally and forever end.

People long for a better world.

A world without corruption.
Without injustice.
Without war.
Without oppression.
Without fear.

Humanity has spent thousands of years trying to build paradise.

But every human kingdom eventually collapses.

Why?

Because the problem is deeper than politics,
economics,
technology,
or education.

The problem is sin.

Revelation 20 shows what happens when Jesus Christ reigns openly over the earth.

Satan is bound.
The saints reign with Christ.
Peace and righteousness characterize the kingdom.

Yet amazingly,
even after a thousand years under the perfect reign of Christ,
many people still rebel when Satan is released.

Revelation 20 proves something important:

The human heart does not merely need a better environment.

It needs salvation.

And Revelation 20 ends with the glorious truth believers have been waiting for since Genesis 3:

Satan’s defeat becomes final forever.

A Quick Look: Revelation 20:1–10

Big idea: Jesus Christ establishes His kingdom, Satan is bound, believers reign with Christ, and Satan is finally defeated forever.

Why this matters: Evil may seem powerful now, but its defeat is certain.

Key truth: Christ reigns victoriously, and Satan’s power is temporary and limited.

Bottom line: God’s kingdom will triumph completely, and Satan’s rebellion will end in eternal judgment.

A Simple Explanation (Revelation 20:1–10)

“He laid hold of the dragon…” (v.2)
Satan is captured and bound.
Meaning: God completely controls Satan’s activity.
Application: Satan is powerful, but he is never equal to God.

“Bound him for a thousand years…” (v.2)
Satan is imprisoned during Christ’s kingdom reign.
Meaning: Christ’s kingdom will not be ruled under satanic deception.
Application: Jesus truly will establish peace and righteousness.

“He would not deceive the nations any longer…” (v.3)
Satan’s deception is stopped temporarily.
Meaning: Satan’s influence over the world is restrained during the Millennium.
Application: Evil does not operate outside God’s permission.

“They came to life and reigned with Christ…” (v.4)
Believers reign with Jesus.
Meaning: God’s people share in Christ’s kingdom victory.
Application: Faithfulness to Christ is worth it.

“This is the first resurrection.” (v.5)
Believers are raised to life and blessing.
Meaning: God’s people have victory over death.
Application: Eternal life belongs to those who belong to Christ.

“The second death has no power…” (v.6)
Believers are safe from eternal judgment.
Meaning: Christians will never face condemnation in hell.
Application: Salvation in Christ gives eternal security and hope.

“Satan will be released…” (v.7)
Satan is released after the thousand years.
Meaning: God allows one final rebellion before the eternal state.
Application: Human rebellion flows from sinful hearts, not merely bad environments.

“Fire came down from heaven…” (v.9)
God destroys the rebellion instantly.
Meaning: Satan’s final rebellion fails completely.
Application: Evil’s defeat is guaranteed.

“The devil… was thrown into the lake of fire…” (v.10)
Satan faces eternal judgment.
Meaning: Satan’s rebellion ends forever.
Application: God’s justice ultimately triumphs.

A Deeper Dive: The Thousand-Year Reign of Christ

1) Revelation 20 Follows Revelation 19

Revelation 19 described the visible return of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 20 follows by describing His kingdom reign.

👉 Christ returns first,
then the kingdom is established.

Revelation presents a clear progression:

  • Christ returns
  • Satan is bound
  • The saints reign
  • Satan rebels one final time
  • Satan is judged forever

2) The Millennium

Revelation repeatedly refers to:
“a thousand years.”

👉 This period is often called the Millennium.

The word “millennium” comes from Latin words meaning:

  • mille = thousand
  • annum = years

Revelation 20 mentions the thousand years six times.

The emphasis is intentional.

3) Satan Is Bound

An angel descends from heaven and binds Satan.

👉 Satan is not equal to God.

He is a created being under God’s authority.

God does not struggle to restrain him.

Satan is imprisoned by divine command.

4) The Four Names of Satan

Revelation uses four names for Satan:

  • dragon
  • serpent of old
  • devil
  • Satan

👉 Each title highlights something about his character.

  • Dragon emphasizes cruelty and destruction
  • Serpent points back to Eden and deception
  • Devil means slanderer or accuser
  • Satan means adversary

5) The Abyss

Satan is thrown into the abyss.

👉 The abyss is a place of temporary confinement for demonic beings.

It is not yet the final lake of fire,
but it is a place of imprisonment and restraint.

6) Satan’s Deception Is Stopped

Satan is bound:
“so that he would not deceive the nations any longer.”

👉 During the Millennium,
Satan’s worldwide deception is halted.

Christ reigns openly,
righteously,
and visibly.

The world experiences peace unlike anything in human history.

7) The Reign of Christ

Revelation 20 presents Christ reigning over the earth.

👉 This fulfills countless Old Testament kingdom promises.

The prophets repeatedly spoke of a future kingdom characterized by:

  • peace
  • justice
  • righteousness
  • restoration
  • joy

Revelation 20 shows those promises reaching fulfillment.

8) The Saints Reign With Christ

John sees thrones and believers reigning with Christ.

👉 God graciously allows His people to share in Christ’s kingdom rule.

This fulfills promises Jesus made to His followers.

The saints do not replace Christ’s authority.

They reign under Him.

9) Tribulation Martyrs Are Raised

John specifically mentions believers who were killed during the Tribulation.

👉 Their suffering was not forgotten.

They refused the Beast,
refused his mark,
and remained faithful to Jesus.

Now they reign with Christ.

10) The First Resurrection

Revelation calls this:
“the first resurrection.”

👉 This is the resurrection unto life for believers.

Scripture consistently teaches two eternal destinies:

  • resurrection unto life
  • resurrection unto judgment

Believers belong to the resurrection of life.

11) The Second Death

Revelation says:
“the second death has no power” over believers.

👉 The second death refers to eternal judgment in the lake of fire.

Christians may experience physical death,
but they will never face eternal condemnation.

12) Priests of God and Christ

Believers are described as priests of God and Christ.

👉 God’s people serve Him in worship,
fellowship,
and kingdom service.

Revelation repeatedly emphasizes the dignity and privilege believers have in Christ.

13) The Millennium Reveals Human Depravity

One of the most shocking truths in Revelation 20 is that rebellion still exists after a thousand years of Christ’s reign.

👉 Perfect conditions do not eliminate sinful hearts.

Humanity’s greatest problem is not environment.

It is sin.

Even under perfect government,
many still reject Christ.

14) Satan Is Released

After the thousand years,
Satan is released for a short time.

👉 God sovereignly allows one final exposure of human rebellion.

Satan immediately resumes his work of deception.

His imprisonment did not change his nature.

15) Gog and Magog

Revelation uses the names Gog and Magog symbolically for the final worldwide rebellion.

👉 The names connect this rebellion to earlier Old Testament imagery of nations opposing God.

The emphasis is not on geography alone,
but on global rebellion against Christ.

16) The Final Rebellion

Satan gathers people from across the earth.

Their number is described as:
“like the sand of the seashore.”

👉 This demonstrates the shocking depth of human rebellion.

Even after experiencing Christ’s righteous reign,
many still reject Him.

17) The Beloved City

The rebellion surrounds:
“the beloved city.”

👉 This refers to Jerusalem,
the center of Messiah’s earthly kingdom reign.

The world again attempts to oppose God’s King.

18) Fire From Heaven

The rebellion ends instantly.

👉 God sends fire from heaven to destroy the rebels.

Just as Revelation 19 showed,
God’s enemies are no match for His power.

The battle is brief because the outcome is never in doubt.

19) Satan’s Final Judgment

Satan is thrown into the lake of fire.

👉 This is Satan’s final and eternal defeat.

The Beast and False Prophet are already there,
showing the permanence of judgment.

Satan’s rebellion is over forever.

20) Eternal Punishment

Revelation says Satan will be tormented:
“day and night forever and ever.”

👉 Revelation presents eternal judgment as conscious and everlasting.

The same book that describes eternal life also describes eternal judgment.

21) Why Revelation 20 Matters

Revelation 20 reminds believers that history is not random.

👉 Christ wins.

Satan loses.

Evil ends.

God’s kingdom triumphs forever.

And believers reign with Christ.
