The Gospels Set 8 Study Resources

The Gospels Set 8 Study Resources

Companion study notes, commentary, and next-step resources for this set of readings from The Gospels Discipleship Journal.

This Set’s Big Idea

Jesus reveals His authority, welcomes repentant sinners, confronts unbelief, and calls people to receive His word with faithful and fruitful hearts.

As you read, watch how Jesus heals, raises the dead, answers John’s doubts, forgives a sinful woman, confronts hard hearts, redefines true family, and teaches that the condition of the heart determines how people respond to God’s Word.

These notes correspond with Set 8 readings in The Gospels Discipleship Journal. First, use MTSM’s Pray, Read, Ask, and Pray method to study the passage devotionally. After you finish, use these notes to deepen your understanding if you’d like.

This set shows several different responses to Jesus. A Roman centurion trusts His authority. A grieving widow experiences His compassion. John the Baptist brings honest questions. A sinful woman responds with love and worship after receiving forgiveness. Meanwhile, some religious leaders harden their hearts even when they witness Jesus’ power.

As you read Luke 7–8, Matthew 12, and Matthew 13, pay attention to the condition of the heart. Some hearts receive Jesus with humble faith. Some hearts question honestly. Some hearts resist Him. Some hearts are distracted, shallow, or hardened. These passages remind us that hearing God’s Word is not enough. Jesus calls us to receive His Word deeply, respond with faith, and bear lasting fruit.
