The River and the Tree of Life (Revelation 22:1–5)
John sees the river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. This river symbolizes the fullness of eternal life flowing directly from God’s presence. Alongside it grows the tree of life, echoing Eden but now available to all the redeemed. Its twelve crops of fruit, yielding every month, portray continual nourishment and abundance. Even the tree’s leaves bring healing to the nations, showing that all brokenness and division are gone forever.
John adds that no longer will there be any curse. Sin and death—introduced in Genesis 3—are finally reversed. God’s throne and His servants’ joyful worship define this eternal city. They will see His face, something impossible in mortal life (Exodus 33:20), but now made possible through Christ. His name on their foreheads signifies belonging and complete security. Eternal light shines without need of sun or lamp, for God Himself is the light, and His people will reign with Him forever.
Assurance of the Vision (Revelation 22:6–11)
The angel reminds John that these words are trustworthy and true, given by God through His prophets. Jesus Himself declares, “Behold, I am coming soon!” (v. 7), emphasizing the certainty of His return. A blessing follows for all who keep the words of this prophecy, reminding us that Revelation calls not only for understanding but for faithful obedience.
When John falls down to worship the angel, he is corrected again (see 19:10). Angels are fellow servants, not worthy of worship; God alone deserves honor. The angel commands John not to seal the prophecy (unlike Daniel 12:4) because the time is near. People must choose: to remain unjust or to turn in repentance, for Christ’s coming will fix everyone’s eternal state.
Christ’s Final Words (Revelation 22:12–16)
Jesus speaks again, promising to come soon with His reward, repaying each person according to their deeds. He identifies Himself as the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End—titles of divine authority. Blessed are those who wash their robes, for they will enter the city and eat from the tree of life. By contrast, the unrepentant—those who persist in sin and falsehood—remain outside.
Jesus confirms His identity further: He is the Root and Offspring of David, fulfilling Israel’s hopes, and the bright Morning Star, the herald of a new eternal day. His words assure believers of both His messianic authority and His promise of ultimate hope.
The Final Invitation and Warning (Revelation 22:17–21)
The Spirit and the bride (the church) echo together: “Come!” This call invites both Christ to return and all who are thirsty to come to Him for the water of life, freely given. Salvation is still available while time remains.
John then records a warning: no one may add to or take away from the words of this prophecy. To tamper with God’s Word is to invite judgment or lose eternal reward.
The book closes with Jesus’ final assurance: “Yes, I am coming soon.” John responds with the prayer of every faithful heart: “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” The final verse leaves believers with grace, the sustaining gift of God’s presence, until Christ returns.
