Who Are the 24 Elders in Revelation?

The 24 Elders in the Book of Revelation

In the book of Revelation, the 24 elders are mentioned twelve times (Revelation 4:4,10; 5:5,6,8,11,14; 7:11,13; 11:16; 14:3; 19:4). Their identity has been the subject of much debate, with three primary interpretations:

  1. Angelic Beings
  2. A Representation of All the Redeemed (Israel + the Church)
  3. The Church Alone

Let’s explore each view.

1. Angelic Beings

Some believe the 24 elders are a special group of angels who serve before God’s throne. However, several factors challenge this interpretation:

  • The term “elders” (Greek: presbuteros) is typically used to refer to humans rather than angels.
  • In Revelation 7:11, angels and the 24 elders are mentioned separately, suggesting they are distinct groups.
  • In Revelation 5:9, the elders sing a song of redemption, declaring that God has “redeemed us from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” Angels are not redeemed; only humans are, making this view problematic.

2. The Church and Israel

Another perspective is that the 24 elders symbolize the entirety of God’s redeemed people: the 12 tribes of Israel + the 12 apostles of the Church. However, this view also has a significant issue:

  • The elders are pictured as already rewarded and crowned, but Old Testament saints (Israel) will not be resurrected and rewarded until after the Tribulation (Daniel 12:1-3). Since their glorification has not yet occurred, this interpretation seems unlikely.

3. The Church

The most substantial evidence suggests that the 24 elders represent the Church in its glorified state. The key is found in Revelation 4:4, where the elders are described as:

  • Seated on thrones → Christ promised this to overcomers (Revelation 3:21).
  • Clothed in white robes → A symbol of righteousness given to believers (Revelation 3:5).
  • Wearing crowns → A reward for faithfulness (Revelation 2:10).

Since these descriptions align with the promises made to the Church, they strongly indicate that the elders represent the redeemed believers from the Church Age (both Jews and Gentiles) who are raptured and in heaven before the Tribulation begins in Revelation 6.

If this interpretation is correct, it also supports the pretribulation rapture, as the Church is already in heaven before God’s judgment unfolds on earth.
