Revelation 2:17 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.
The meaning of the “white stone with a new name” is best understood in light of first-century cultural practices, with three primary interpretations.
- A Legal Symbol of Acquittal – In ancient courts, jurors used black and white stones to render verdicts—black for guilty, white for innocent. The white stone in Revelation 2:17 may represent the believer’s full acquittal before God through Christ. However, the absence of inscriptions on these legal stones makes this interpretation less certain.
- A Protective Amulet – Some white stones served as good luck charms, believed to offer protection, primarily if their inscriptions were known only to the bearer. While this fits historical imagery, it is unlikely that Jesus would reference a pagan superstition to illustrate a believer’s security in Him.
- An Admission Ticket – In that era, special event passes—such as tickets to theaters or banquets—were often issued as white stones inscribed with a person’s name. Given the context of the hidden manna, which symbolizes spiritual nourishment, this view suggests that the white stone represents entry into the future messianic banquet. Each believer will receive a unique, personal invitation marked by a new name known only to them and the Lord.
While the exact meaning remains uncertain, the overarching message is clear: those who remain faithful to Christ will receive eternal reward and personal recognition from Him.
