Can the names of believers be erased from the book of life?

Many people wonder whether Revelation 3:5 suggests that a true believer can lose their salvation. How does this verse align with the Bible’s broader teaching on the eternal security of believers? Yet, instead of implying that a believer’s name could be removed, this verse powerfully assures that it never will be.

The original Greek text of Revelation 3:5 is emphatic, using a double negative (ou me), which could be translated as “I will never, ever under any circumstance erase his name from the book of life.” I appreciate John MacArthur’s insight on this verse; he says:

“Incredibly, although the text says the opposite, some assume it means a believer’s name can be erased. They foolishly turn a promise into a threat.”

Even the spiritually weak believers in Sardis were given this unshakable promise of eternal life. Every true believer can rest in this same assurance (Philippians 1:6), knowing their salvation is forever secure in Christ.
