Revelation 22:6-21: A Final Invitation

How to Use This Commentary

Revelation 22:6–21 forms the closing epilogue of Revelation and the final words of the entire Bible.

Read this passage in six major movements: (1) the certainty of Revelation’s prophecy (vv.6–7), (2) the call to worship and proclaim the message (vv.8–11), (3) Christ’s coming reward (v.12), (4) the final invitation to salvation (vv.13–17), (5) the warning not to alter Scripture (vv.18–19), and (6) the final promise of Christ’s return and closing grace (vv.20–21).

These verses remind believers that Revelation is not merely about future events. It is a call to worship Christ, proclaim the gospel, live faithfully, and long for His return.

Key: The Bible ends with a promise, a warning, and an invitation—Jesus is coming soon, judgment is real, and salvation is still freely offered to all who will come to Him.

Every story has a final page.

Every kingdom has an ending.
Every empire eventually falls.
Every human life reaches its conclusion.

But the Bible does not end with uncertainty.

It ends with Jesus Christ.

The final chapter of Scripture does not close with confusion,
fear,
or defeat.

It closes with a victorious King who promises:

“Surely I am coming quickly.”

Revelation ends with urgency.

An invitation is still open.
Grace is still available.
Salvation is still free.

But the door will not remain open forever.

One day Christ truly will return.
Judgment truly will come.
And eternity truly will begin.

The final verses of Revelation call every reader to make a decision:

Will you come to Jesus while there is still time?

A Quick Look: Revelation 22:6–21

A Deeper Dive: The Bible’s Final Promise, Warning, and Invitation

1) The Epilogue of Revelation

Revelation 22:6–21 serves as the final epilogue not only to Revelation,
but to the entire Bible.

👉 Scripture began with creation,
the fall,
and the promise of redemption.

It ends with restoration,
eternal glory,
and the promise of Christ’s return.

2) “Faithful and True”

The angel declares:
“These words are faithful and true.”

👉 Revelation is not fantasy,
fiction,
or speculation.

God guarantees the certainty of every prophecy in this book.

3) The Imminent Return of Christ

Jesus repeatedly says:
“I am coming quickly.”

👉 The emphasis is not necessarily speed,
but imminence and readiness.

Christians are called to live as though Christ could return at any moment.

4) Prophecy Is Meant to Produce Obedience

Jesus blesses those who:
“heed the words of the prophecy.”

👉 Revelation was not given merely to create debates about timelines.

It was given to motivate:
holiness,
faithfulness,
worship,
and perseverance.

5) John Falls in Worship

John collapses before the angel in awe.

👉 Revelation should lead readers to worship.

The greatness of Christ and the glory of eternity overwhelm John.

6) Worship Belongs to God Alone

The angel rebukes John:
“Worship God.”

👉 Even glorious angels are fellow servants,
not objects of worship.

Revelation constantly directs worship toward God and the Lamb.

7) Revelation Must Be Proclaimed

John is commanded:
“Do not seal up the words.”

👉 God intends believers to read,
study,
understand,
and proclaim Revelation.

This book was written to strengthen believers and reveal Jesus Christ.

8) Fixed Eternal Destinies

Revelation warns that people become fixed in either righteousness or rebellion.

👉 Death and judgment permanently settle eternity.

Today is the opportunity for repentance and faith.

9) Christ Comes With Reward

Jesus declares:
“My reward is with Me.”

👉 Believers will be rewarded for faithful service.

Salvation is by grace,
but faithfulness still matters deeply to God.

10) Alpha and Omega

Jesus identifies Himself as:
“the Alpha and the Omega.”

👉 Christ is eternal,
sovereign,
and divine.

History begins and ends with Him.

11) Root and Descendant of David

Jesus is both:
“the root and the descendant of David.”

👉 This highlights both Christ’s deity and humanity.

As God,
He existed before David.

As man,
He descended from David’s line as the promised Messiah.

12) The Bright Morning Star

Jesus calls Himself:
“the bright morning star.”

👉 The morning star announces the arrival of dawn.

Christ’s return signals the end of darkness and the beginning of His eternal kingdom.

13) The Final Invitation

Revelation closes with:
“Come.”

👉 The Holy Spirit,
the church,
and believers together invite sinners to come to Christ.

Salvation remains freely available.

14) The Water of Life

Revelation offers:
“the water of life without cost.”

👉 Salvation cannot be earned.

Jesus already paid the full price through His death and resurrection.

15) Heaven Is Exclusive

Only those who:
“wash their robes” enter the eternal city.

👉 Heaven is holy.

Only those cleansed through Christ may enter God’s presence.

16) The Reality of Judgment

Revelation describes those who remain outside the city.

👉 Persistent,
unrepentant rebellion against God leads to eternal separation.

Revelation never minimizes either God’s holiness or human accountability.

17) Do Not Alter Scripture

Revelation warns against adding to or taking away from God’s Word.

👉 Scripture carries divine authority.

God’s people are called to handle His Word carefully,
faithfully,
and reverently.

18) The Closing Promise

Jesus ends Scripture with:
“Yes, I am coming quickly.”

👉 Christ’s return is the believer’s ultimate hope.

History is moving toward the visible return of the King.

19) “Come, Lord Jesus”

John responds:
“Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”

👉 This is the cry of every faithful believer.

Christians long for the day when sin,
suffering,
death,
and rebellion are finally defeated forever.

20) The Bible Ends With Grace

Scripture closes with:
“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.”

👉 The story of redemption both begins and ends with God’s grace.

From Genesis to Revelation,
salvation has always been God’s gracious work through Jesus Christ.

21) Why This Passage Matters

Revelation 22 reminds readers that history is not random.

👉 Christ will return.
Judgment is certain.
Eternity is real.

But until that day,
God still extends His gracious invitation:

“Come.”
