Introduction to Ecclesiastes

Big Idea

Ecclesiastes teaches that life apart from God will never satisfy the human heart, but life lived in reverent dependence on God is full of purpose, meaning, and joy.

Introduction: A Book for the Questions We All Ask

Few books in the Bible feel as honest as Ecclesiastes.

It speaks to the questions many people are afraid to ask.

Why does life sometimes feel repetitive?

Why do hard-working people suffer while the wicked seem to prosper?

Why do success, wealth, pleasure, and achievement often leave us feeling empty?

Why does death come to everyone regardless of status, intelligence, or accomplishment?

Ecclesiastes refuses to ignore life’s difficult realities.

Instead, it faces them head-on.

The writer looks at the world with remarkable honesty. He observes its beauty and its brokenness. He sees moments of joy alongside moments of frustration. He celebrates God’s gifts while acknowledging that much of life remains beyond our understanding.

That is why Ecclesiastes has connected with readers for thousands of years.

It speaks to the reality of life as we actually experience it.

Yet Ecclesiastes is not a book of despair.

It is a book of perspective.

The writer repeatedly exposes the emptiness of life when God is removed from the equation. But he also points us toward the only place where lasting meaning can be found.

The message is simple:

Life makes sense only when viewed through the lens of God.

Why Ecclesiastes Was Written

Many people assume Ecclesiastes teaches that life is meaningless.

In reality, it teaches something much deeper.

The writer is not saying that life itself has no value.

He is showing us that life apart from God cannot provide the meaning we are searching for.

Throughout the book, he explores every place people commonly look for fulfillment.

Wisdom.

Pleasure.

Wealth.

Work.

Success.

Achievement.

Possessions.

Relationships.

Yet none of them can ultimately satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart.

Why?

Because we were created for more than temporary things.

We were created for God.

Ecclesiastes strips away false hopes so that we can discover true hope.

It exposes empty pursuits so that we can embrace lasting joy.

In many ways, Ecclesiastes functions like a loving warning sign.

It tells us where not to look for life so that we can find life where it truly exists.

Who Wrote Ecclesiastes?

The author identifies himself as “the Teacher” and describes himself as “son of David, king in Jerusalem.”

For centuries, many believers have understood this to refer to Solomon.

After all, Solomon was known for extraordinary wisdom, immense wealth, remarkable achievements, and unparalleled influence.

He experienced nearly everything people today still pursue in their search for fulfillment.

Whether Solomon himself wrote every word or whether the book was compiled around his life and experiences, the message remains the same.

The Teacher speaks with the voice of someone who has tried everything the world offers.

And his conclusion is unforgettable.

Without God, even the greatest accomplishments eventually leave us empty.

With God, even ordinary moments become meaningful.

Understanding Two Key Ideas

“Meaningless”

One of the most repeated words in Ecclesiastes is often translated “meaningless” or “vanity.”

The writer is not saying that nothing matters.

Rather, he is describing life’s temporary and elusive nature. Much of life feels like a vapor—here one moment and gone the next. Many things we try to hold onto slip through our fingers.

Life is fragile.

Life is fleeting.

Life cannot be controlled.

That reality should not drive us to despair.

It should drive us to dependence upon God.

“Under the Sun”

Another important phrase is “under the sun.”

The Teacher often describes life from a purely human perspective—from what people can see, understand, and accomplish on their own.

When people live only for what is “under the sun,” they inevitably find frustration.

But when God enters the picture, everything changes.

The book repeatedly reminds us that true joy comes not from what we possess, but from receiving life as a gift from God.

What Ecclesiastes Teaches Us

Ecclesiastes invites us to take an honest look at life.

It acknowledges suffering.

It wrestles with injustice.

It admits confusion.

It recognizes that we do not always understand what God is doing.

Yet it also teaches that God remains sovereign even when life feels uncertain.

The Teacher calls us to stop chasing things that cannot satisfy and to begin enjoying the gifts God has already provided.

Work.

Friendship.

Family.

Food.

Worship.

Rest.

These ordinary gifts become extraordinary when received from God’s hand.

Ecclesiastes reminds us that joy is not found in having more.

Joy is found in knowing God.

Major Themes in Ecclesiastes

The Search for Meaning

Every person longs for purpose. Ecclesiastes shows us where meaning cannot be found and where it ultimately must be found.

The Limits of Human Wisdom

Knowledge is valuable, but human understanding has limits. Only God sees the whole picture.

The Reality of Death

Death reminds us that life is temporary and should be lived with eternal perspective.

The Gift of Joy

Even in a fallen world, God gives good gifts to be enjoyed with gratitude.

The Fear of the Lord

True wisdom begins when we humbly recognize God as Creator, Judge, and King.

Theological Themes

  • God is sovereign over every season of life.
  • Human wisdom has limits.
  • Lasting fulfillment cannot be found apart from God.
  • Life is a gift to be received with gratitude.
  • God will ultimately bring justice and judgment.
  • The fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.

Truths and Lessons for Today

1. Success Cannot Satisfy the Human Heart

The Teacher pursued wealth, achievement, and pleasure yet found them unable to provide lasting fulfillment.

🡲 Application: Do not build your identity around accomplishments. Build your life around Christ.

📖 “Everything is meaningless—a chasing after the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 2:11)

2. God Gives Meaning to Ordinary Life

The simple gifts of work, family, friendship, and worship become meaningful when received as gifts from God.

🡲 Application: Practice gratitude. Look for God’s goodness in the ordinary moments of your day.

📖 “So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can.” (Ecclesiastes 3:12, NLT)

3. We Do Not Have to Understand Everything

Ecclesiastes reminds us that God’s plans are bigger than our understanding.

🡲 Application: Trust God’s character when you cannot trace His purposes.

📖 “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11, NLT)

4. Life Should Be Lived with Eternity in View

The reality of death reminds us that every day is a gift and every life will one day stand before God.

🡲 Application: Invest your life in things that will matter forever.

📖 “Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13, NLT)

Conclusion

Ecclesiastes is one of the most honest books in the Bible.

It understands disappointment.

It understands frustration.

It understands unanswered questions.

Yet it refuses to leave us there.

The Teacher leads us through the empty promises of this world so that we can discover the lasting hope found in God.

The world says more possessions, more success, and more pleasure will satisfy us.

Ecclesiastes says otherwise.

True life is not found in what we gain.

It is found in whom we know.

Ultimately, Ecclesiastes points us toward Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the wisdom of God.

Jesus is the source of lasting joy.

Jesus is the answer to humanity’s search for meaning.

And in Him, we find the purpose, hope, and fulfillment that life under the sun can never provide.
