Why Ecclesiastes Was Written

Many people assume Ecclesiastes teaches that life is meaningless.

The author identifies himself as “the Teacher” and describes himself as “son of David, king in Jerusalem.”

For centuries, many believers have understood this to refer to Solomon.

After all, Solomon was known for extraordinary wisdom, immense wealth, remarkable achievements, and unparalleled influence.

He experienced nearly everything people today still pursue in their search for fulfillment.

Whether Solomon himself wrote every word or whether the book was compiled around his life and experiences, the message remains the same.

The Teacher speaks with the voice of someone who has tried everything the world offers.

And his conclusion is unforgettable.

Without God, even the greatest accomplishments eventually leave us empty.

With God, even ordinary moments become meaningful.

Understanding Two Key Ideas

“Meaningless”

One of the most repeated words in Ecclesiastes is often translated “meaningless” or “vanity.”

The writer is not saying that nothing matters.

Rather, he is describing life’s temporary and elusive nature. Much of life feels like a vapor—here one moment and gone the next. Many things we try to hold onto slip through our fingers.

Life is fragile.

Life is fleeting.

Life cannot be controlled.

“Under the Sun”

The Teacher often describes life from a purely human perspective—from what people can see, understand, and accomplish on their own.

When people live only for what is “under the sun,” they inevitably find frustration.

But when God enters the picture, everything changes.

The book repeatedly reminds us that true joy comes not from what we possess, but from receiving life as a gift from God.

What Ecclesiastes Teaches Us

The Teacher leads us through the empty promises of this world so that we can discover the lasting hope found in God.

The world says more possessions, more success, and more pleasure will satisfy us.

True life is not found in what we gain.

Ultimately, Ecclesiastes points us toward Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the wisdom of God.

Jesus is the source of lasting joy.

Jesus is the answer to humanity’s search for meaning.

And in Him, we find the purpose, hope, and fulfillment that life under the sun can never provide.
