How to Use This Commentary
Revelation 1:9–20 records John’s first vision of the glorified Christ. This passage answers three key questions: (1) Where is Jesus right now?, (2) What is He doing?, and (3) Why does that matter for the church?
Read it in three movements: (1) the setting of the vision (vv.9–11), (2) the vision of Christ (vv.12–16), and (3) the response and commission (vv.17–20).
Key: Jesus is not distant—He is present, powerful, and actively working in His church.
When life feels uncertain, we need a clear vision of Jesus.
The churches in Revelation were suffering, discouraged, and under pressure.
So what does Jesus give them first?
Not a timeline—but a vision of Himself.
👉 Before you understand the future, you must see Christ clearly.
A Quick Look: Revelation 1:9–20
Big idea: The risen and glorified Jesus is present with His church, ruling, refining, and speaking with authority.
Why this matters: No matter how difficult things look, Christ has not abandoned His church.
Key truth: Jesus is powerful, holy, sovereign, and actively at work among His people.
Bottom line: The church’s hope is not in circumstances—but in the present reign of Christ.
A Simple Explanation (Revelation 1:9–20)
“I, John…your brother” (v.9)

“Write what you see…” (v.11)
This message is for the church.
Meaning: Revelation is meant to be shared.

“I saw…one like a son of man” (v.13)
Jesus stands among His churches.
Meaning: He is present with His people.
Application: Christ is with you now.
“His eyes…His feet…” (vv.14–15)
Jesus sees and judges perfectly.
Meaning: Nothing is hidden from Him.
Application: Live with reverence and honesty.
“When I saw Him, I fell…” (v.17)
God’s holiness overwhelms.
Meaning: Jesus is glorious beyond comprehension.
Application: Approach Him with awe.
“Do not be afraid…” (v.17)
Jesus comforts His people.
Meaning: The One who is powerful is also gracious.
Application: Find peace in Him.
A Deeper Dive: The Glorified Christ Among His Church
1) The Setting: Suffering but Not Abandoned
John writes as a “fellow partaker” in tribulation (Revelation 1:9). He is exiled on Patmos for the gospel.
The church is suffering—but Christ is not absent.
2) The Vision: Christ Among the Lampstands
The lampstands represent the churches (Revelation 1:20). Jesus stands in their midst.
👉 He is present with His church (Matthew 28:20).
3) The Identity of Christ
- Son of Man (Daniel 7:13)
- Priestly robe → intercession (Hebrews 7:25)
- White hair → divine wisdom (Daniel 7:9)
- Eyes of fire → perfect knowledge (Hebrews 4:13)
- Feet of bronze → judgment
👉 This is not the suffering servant of the Gospels—this is the reigning Lord.
4) Christ’s Present Ministry
This vision shows what Jesus is doing now:
- Present with His church
- Interceding for His people
- Purifying His church
- Speaking with authority
- Holding leaders accountable
- Protecting His people
5) The Response: Fear and Assurance
John falls “like a dead man” (Revelation 1:17).
👉 The proper response to God’s holiness is awe.
But Jesus responds with grace:
👉 “Do not be afraid.”
He comforts John with truth:
- I am the First and Last
- I was dead, now alive
- I hold the keys of death (Revelation 1:17–18)
6) The Commission: Write the Vision
Revelation 1:19 provides the structure of the book:
- What you have seen (chapter 1)
- What is (chapters 2–3)
- What will be (chapters 4–22)
- Christ is present with His church
- He sees everything clearly
- He purifies and protects His people
- He speaks with authority
- He reigns over life and death
Bottom Line (Revelation 1:9–20)
Jesus is not distant—He is present, powerful, and actively leading, refining, and protecting His church.
