The Gospels Set 3 Study Resources

The Gospels Set 3 Study Resources

Companion study notes, commentary, and next-step resources for this set of readings from The Gospels Discipleship Journal.

This Set’s Big Idea

Jesus is revealed as the beloved Son of God, the Lamb of God, and the obedient Savior who overcomes temptation and calls people to follow Him.

As you read, watch how John the Baptist points away from himself and toward Jesus, how the Father identifies Jesus as His beloved Son, and how the first disciples begin to follow the One they have found.

These notes correspond with Set 3 readings in The Gospels Discipleship Journal. First, use MTSM’s Pray, Read, Ask, and Pray method to study the passage devotionally. After you finish, use these notes to deepen your understanding if you’d like.

This set moves from preparation to public identification and early discipleship. John the Baptist prepares the way, Jesus is baptized and affirmed by the Father, Jesus resists temptation in the wilderness, and the first disciples begin following Him. As you read Mark 1, Matthew 3–4, and John 1, pay attention to who Jesus is, how He obeys, and how people respond when they recognize Him.
