This set continues Jesus’ final teaching to His disciples before the cross. In John 15, Jesus identifies Himself as the true vine and teaches that spiritual life and lasting fruit come only through abiding in Him. His disciples are not called to produce fruit through self-reliance, but to remain closely connected to Christ, receive His words, obey His commands, and love one another as He has loved them.

Jesus also prepares His followers for opposition. The world’s rejection of them should not be surprising because it first rejected Him. Yet they will not face hostility alone. Jesus promises the Holy Spirit, who will testify about Him, convict the world, guide believers into truth, and glorify Christ.

As you read John 16, pay attention to the movement from sorrow to joy, confusion to understanding, and fear to courage. Jesus does not promise His followers an easy life. He promises something better: His presence and victory. They will experience trouble in the world, but they can take heart because He has overcome the world.

John 17 allows us to listen as Jesus prays for His disciples and for all who will later believe through their message. He prays that His people will know God, be protected from evil, be sanctified by the truth, live in visible unity, and continue His mission in the world. These passages invite us to abide in Christ, depend on the Spirit, love one another deeply, stand faithfully under pressure, and live as a united people who make Jesus known.
