The Gospels Set 11 Study Resources

The Gospels Set 11 Study Resources

Companion study notes, commentary, and next-step resources for this set of readings from The Gospels Discipleship Journal.

This Set’s Big Idea

Jesus is the Bread of Life who calls people beyond shallow religion, outward appearances, and temporary satisfaction into true faith, heart-level transformation, and persistent trust.

As you read, watch how Jesus confronts crowd-level faith, teaches that He alone gives eternal life, exposes the condition of the heart, honors the persistent faith of a Gentile woman, and shows compassion to needy people.

These notes correspond with Set 11 readings in The Gospels Discipleship Journal. First, use MTSM’s Pray, Read, Ask, and Pray method to study the passage devotionally. After you finish, use these notes to deepen your understanding if you’d like.

This set centers on how people respond when Jesus challenges their expectations. In John 6, the crowds seek Jesus after the feeding miracle, but He calls them to look beyond temporary bread to the eternal life only He can give. Many find His teaching difficult and turn away, while Peter confesses that Jesus alone has the words of eternal life.

As you read Mark 7 and Matthew 15, pay attention to how Jesus exposes the difference between outward religion and the true condition of the heart. He confronts empty traditions, teaches that defilement comes from within, responds to the persistent faith of a Gentile woman, and shows compassion to the hurting and hungry. These passages invite us to trust Jesus even when His teaching challenges us, examine our hearts honestly, and come to Him as the only One who truly satisfies.
