The final product of human civilization is portrayed as a great wicked city—Babylon the Great. This city represents humanity’s arrogance, corruption, and idolatry, serving as the capital of Antichrist, persecuting God’s people, and is destined to face God’s wrath.
Babylon Described (Revelation 17:1–6)
One of the angels who poured out the bowls of wrath invites John to see the judgment of the “great prostitute.” She is not just a woman but a symbol of corrupt civilization, seducing kings and intoxicating nations with immorality and idolatry. Like ancient Babylon, she influences the world with power and wealth but opposes God and His people.
John sees her in the wilderness, seated on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names. The beast is Antichrist, symbolizing raw political-military power. The woman’s lavish clothing of purple and scarlet and her golden cup show splendor, but the contents are vile and detestable. Her name is revealed: Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and Abominations of the Earth. She is the source of idolatry and evil in the world.
John is horrified to see that she is drunk with the blood of the saints—those who faithfully bore witness to Christ. Civilization apart from God, no matter how glamorous, always ends in violence against His people.
Babylon and the Monster Interpreted (Revelation 17:7–18)
The angel explains the mystery of the prostitute and the beast. The beast mimics God’s eternal nature but is a counterfeit—it “once was, now is not, and yet will come.” It rises from the Abyss, showing its demonic source, but is destined for destruction. The world will be amazed and follow it, but those written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will not be deceived.
The seven heads represent both Rome’s seven hills and a succession of hostile kingdoms opposed to God’s people, from Egypt to Rome. The seventh head points to the future Antichrist, and the eighth king—Antichrist himself—will emerge briefly, only to face destruction.
The ten horns symbolize a coalition of rulers who give their power to Antichrist for a short time. Together, they will make war against the Lamb, but Christ will triumph because He is Lord of lords and King of kings. His followers, called, chosen, and faithful, will share in His victory.
In a surprising twist, the beast and his allies will turn on Babylon itself. The city they once supported will be stripped, devoured, and burned, fulfilling God’s sovereign purpose. Evil will destroy itself, but behind it all, God’s Word will be fulfilled.
Finally, the angel makes clear: the prostitute is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth. In John’s day, this was Rome, but it also represents the ultimate expression of civilization in rebellion against God—a city destined for judgment.
Conclusion
The final product of human civilization will be a great wicked city, Babylon the Great, the capital of Antichrist and persecutor of God’s people. Though powerful and corrupt, it is destined for God’s wrath and destruction.
Truths and Lessons for Today
1. Worldly Splendor Can Hide Deadly Corruption
Babylon the Great dazzled with wealth, beauty, and power, but inside her golden cup was filth and abominations. The most impressive achievements of civilization can mask spiritual rot.
🡲 Application: Don’t be deceived by appearances. Measure success by God’s standards, not the world’s. Live with discernment so you don’t drink the world’s intoxicating lies.
📖 “She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with obscenities and the impurities of her immorality.” (Revelation 17:4, NLT)
2. Evil Always Turns on Itself
The very kings and beast who once supported Babylon later destroy her. Sin and rebellion carry the seeds of their own collapse. Human empires built apart from God will fall.
🡲 Application: Put your hope in Christ’s eternal kingdom, not in political power, cultural prestige, or economic strength. All worldly systems eventually crumble, but Christ’s reign endures.
📖 “The scarlet beast and his ten horns all hated the prostitute. They stripped her naked, ate her flesh, and burned her remains with fire.” (Revelation 17:16, NLT)
3. The Lamb Will Triumph Over All Powers
The kings of the earth unite with Antichrist to wage war against the Lamb, but the outcome is certain—Jesus wins. His followers, called, chosen, and faithful, share in His victory.
🡲 Application: Stand firm in loyalty to Christ, even when the world pressures you to compromise. You belong to the King of kings, and His triumph is your triumph.
📖 “Together they will go to war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will defeat them because he is Lord of all lords and King of all kings.” (Revelation 17:14, NLT)
