Chosen, Redeemed, and Sealed in Christ (Ephesians 1:1-23)

Greeting and Blessing (Ephesians 1:1–2)

Paul begins his letter by introducing himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ. He did not choose this role; God appointed and gifted him for it. He writes to the Christians in Ephesus, calling them “holy people who are faithful followers of Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 1:1, NLT). Paul greets them with the words “grace and peace.” These were common greetings in his day, but Paul fills them with depth by rooting them in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace and peace were not mere pleasantries—they were blessings essential to Christian life.

Spiritual Blessings from the Father (Ephesians 1:3–6)

Paul praises God the Father for giving believers “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ” (Ephesians 1:3, NLT). These blessings belong to all Christians, even when we don’t always feel them. Paul reminds us of what they include.

First, God chose us before he made the world. His plan was that we “would be holy and without fault in his eyes” (Ephesians 1:4, NLT). This does not mean Christians never sin, but it means that because of Christ’s sacrifice, God sees us as holy.

Second, God adopted us into his family. Through Jesus, he made us his children, giving us full rights and privileges as heirs. Paul emphasizes that this adoption brought God pleasure: “This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure” (Ephesians 1:5, NLT). Adoption is not a reluctant acceptance—it is a joyful, intentional act of God’s love.

Spiritual Blessings from the Son (Ephesians 1:7–12)

Next, Paul describes the blessings we receive through Jesus Christ. In Christ, “he is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins” (Ephesians 1:7, NLT). Redemption means we were purchased from slavery to sin. Forgiveness means God cancels our debt completely.

Paul explains that God also revealed to us the mystery of his will. His plan is that “at the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth” (Ephesians 1:10, NLT).

Finally, in Christ we have obtained an inheritance. God chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan (Ephesians 1:11). The result of these blessings is clear: “God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God” (Ephesians 1:12, NLT).

Spiritual Blessings from the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14)

Paul then shifts to the blessings believers receive through the Holy Spirit. When we believed, God “identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago” (Ephesians 1:13, NLT). The Spirit marks us as authentic children of God and secures our future.

The Spirit is also God’s guarantee. Paul says, “The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised” (Ephesians 1:14, NLT). Just like a down payment ensures a purchase, the Spirit assures us of eternal redemption. This security should lead us to praise God for his amazing grace.

Prayer for Spiritual Insight (Ephesians 1:15–23)

Paul closes the chapter with a prayer for the Ephesian believers. He thanks God for their faith and love, then asks God to give them “spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God” (Ephesians 1:17, NLT).

Specifically, Paul prays that they would grasp three truths:

  • The confident hope God gives to his people.
  • The rich and glorious inheritance he promises.
  • The incredible greatness of God’s power for those who believe.

Paul explains this power by pointing to the resurrection: “This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand” (Ephesians 1:19-20, NLT). Jesus is far above any ruler, authority, or power. God appointed him “the head over all things for the benefit of the church” (Ephesians 1:22, NLT).

The church is Christ’s body, filled by his presence. Paul’s prayer reminds us that believers are not weak or uncertain. We have hope, an eternal inheritance, and access to the very power that raised Jesus from the dead.

Truths and Lessons for Today

1. God Chose and Adopted Us

God chose us before creation to be holy and adopted into his family. His love is intentional, not accidental.

🡲 Application: Remember, your worth is rooted in God’s choice and adoption, not in people’s approval or your achievements.

📖 “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us… God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family.” (Ephesians 1:4–5, NLT)

2. Christ Redeemed and Forgave Us

Through Christ’s blood, we are redeemed and forgiven. He paid our debt in full and revealed God’s plan to unite all things under Him.

🡲 Application: Live in the freedom Christ purchased. Stop carrying guilt for sins already forgiven, and focus on walking in his grace.

📖 “He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.” (Ephesians 1:7, NLT)

3. The Spirit Seals and Secures Us

The Holy Spirit marks us as God’s own and guarantees our eternal inheritance, giving us confidence for today and hope for the future.

🡲 Application: Rest in the Spirit’s assurance. Your salvation is not fragile—it is sealed, secured, and guaranteed by God himself.
