Freed from the Law, Empowered by the Spirit (Romans 7:1-25)

Paul begins this chapter with a powerful illustration to help his readers understand how a believer’s relationship to the law has changed. “Don’t you know, dear brothers and sisters,” he says, “that the law applies only while a person is living?” (Romans 7:1, NLT). Just as physical death frees a person from earthly obligations, spiritual death with Christ frees us from the law’s demands. To make this point, Paul uses the example of marriage. “When a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her” (7:2). She is only free to marry someone else if her husband has died; otherwise, it would be adultery. This illustration sets up Paul’s application: “So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ” (7:4). Through spiritual death, we are released from the law and are now free to “live for God” and “bear fruit to God” instead of being controlled by “the old way of living in the flesh” (7:4–5).

Now we serve in “the new way of living in the Spirit” and not “the old way of living under the written code” (7:6). Paul anticipates objections. Is he suggesting that the law is sinful? Absolutely not! “In fact,” he says, “it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, ‘You must not covet’” (7:7). The law isn’t evil; it reveals sin. Paul explains that sin uses God’s good law to tempt and deceive. “Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me; it used the commands to kill me” (7:11). The law is not the problem—“the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good” (7:12). Rather, sin is the problem, twisting God’s good instructions to bring spiritual death.

Paul then describes the inner conflict every believer faces. “The trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin” (7:14). Even though Paul wants to do what is right, he finds himself doing the very thing he hates. “I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway” (7:19). This isn’t an excuse, but a diagnosis. “It is sin living in me that does it” (7:20). He finds this to be a principle: “There is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me” (7:23). Even as he delights in God’s law, he sees another force pulling him toward sin. This tension leaves him crying out, “Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?” (7:24). Thankfully, the answer is immediate and joyful: “Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord” (7:25).

Truths and Lessons for Today

1. Your Death to the Law Opens the Door to Life in Christ
Believers are not bound by the law’s condemnation. Through Christ, we’ve died to the law and now belong to Him.

🡲 Application: When guilt and shame resurface, remind yourself that your spiritual record is clean because of Jesus. You’re no longer under law but under grace.

2. The Law Reveals Sin but Cannot Rescue You from It
God’s law exposes our sinfulness but lacks the power to transform us. That power comes only through the Spirit.

🡲 Application: Use the Word as a mirror—let it show you your sin, but then run to Jesus, the only one who can save and sanctify.

3. The Struggle with Sin Is Real—But So Is the Victory
Even mature believers wrestle with sin. The good news is that Jesus delivers us—not by our strength, but His.

🡲 Application: When you feel spiritually exhausted or defeated, don’t give up. Cry out to Jesus and trust His Spirit to fight for you.
