This devotion is based on the sermon: Pop Crazy or Kingdom Crazy
Devotional
On the night of July 4, 2025, heavy rains triggered a devastating flash flood at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ camp along the Guadalupe River in Texas. As floodwaters surged unexpectedly in the dark of night, chaos swept through the campgrounds. Amid the rising danger, Dick Eastland, co-owner of the camp and longtime director, sprang into action—not to save his possessions, but to save lives.
While others fled to safety, Dick returned into the floodwaters, doing everything he could to rescue stranded campers. In the end, he gave his life trying to ensure others might live. His family later shared that this kind of selfless, sacrificial love was who he was—a man driven by faith, service, and the good of others above his own comfort.
In a moment of crisis, Dick Eastland chose to give—not from abundance, but at great personal cost. His sacrifice points us to the ultimate example of generosity: Jesus Christ, who though rich, became poor for our sake (2 Corinthians 8:9). When we truly grasp the depth of Christ’s sacrificial love, generosity no longer feels like a burden—it becomes a joyful response. Like Dick, may we hold loosely to what we have and freely use it for what truly matters: eternal purposes and the good of others.
Bible Verse
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” – 2 Corinthians 8:9
