Pastor’s Sermon Notes

Understanding Lust and Pornography: A Biblical Perspective on Sexual Purity

In today’s digital age, the struggle with lust and pornography has become increasingly prevalent, even within the church. This exploration of Matthew 5:27-30 provides important insights into God’s design for sexuality and the dangers of unchecked lust.

The Reality of Pornography in Modern Society

Recent statistics paint a sobering picture:

  • Over half of Christian young adults, and this is in the age bracket of 18 to 24 years old, actively seek out pornography every week.
  • 64% of churchgoing men and 34% of churchgoing women regularly consume pornography
  • The average age of first exposure is 12 years old.
  • One website alone logged 4 billion hours of pornography consumption in one year.

Why Pornography and Lust Are Harmful

Despite cultural messages suggesting pornography is harmless, several key problems exist:

  • Creates and nurtures selfish attitudes in relationships
  • Objectifies people made in God’s image
  • Often involves the exploitation of vulnerable people
  • Rewires brain chemistry and decision-making
  • Violates God’s design for sexuality
  • Damages relationships and marriages

Jesus’s Teaching on Lust

Jesus teaches that lust goes beyond physical acts:

  • Looking with lustful intent equals adultery in the heart
  • Applies to both men and women
  • It is not about accidental glances but intentional gazing
  • Reveals the condition of our hearts

How to Deal with Sexual Temptation

Jesus provides clear guidance:

  • Deal with sin decisively
  • Remove sources of temptation
  • Set clear boundaries
  • Take practical steps to avoid compromise
  • Seek accountabilityRun from sexual immorality

Life Application

To overcome struggles with lust and pornography:

  1. Be vulnerable with trusted Christian friends
  2. Seek accountability partnerships
  3. Use accountability software and filters
  4. Join support groups or discipleship groups
  5. Set practical boundaries with media and relationships

Questions to consider:

  • Who will you become vulnerable with about your struggles?
  • What specific steps will you take this week to deal decisively with temptation?
  • How can you better protect yourself and your family from exposure to inappropriate content?

Remember: Christ died so we could be free from sin’s bondage. Don’t let shame keep you from seeking help and experiencing victory in this area of your life.
