5.7.25 – Overcoming Lust: The Power of Greater Love

This devotion is based on the sermon: The Dangers of Lust

Pastor’s Sermon Notes

Devotional

Years ago, a recovering addict shared his story in a support group. He said, “I tried quitting a hundred times, but it never lasted—until I fell in love with my daughter.” He described how the birth of his little girl gave him a reason greater than fear or guilt to walk away from his addiction. “Suddenly,” he said, “the craving didn’t feel worth it anymore. I had something better to live for.”

That’s the power of a greater love. True purity isn’t achieved through willpower alone—it comes from a heart captivated by something greater. When we’re deeply in love with God, running from temptation becomes a natural response, not just a duty. Like Joseph fleeing from Potiphar’s wife, we’re called to make decisive moves away from compromise. This isn’t about shame or fear; it’s about pursuing the freedom and joy found in close fellowship with God.

Bible Verse

“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” – Psalm 119:37

“Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.” – 2 Timothy 2:22

Reflection Question

What practical steps can you take today to run toward God rather than just trying to run away from temptation?

Quote

A pure heart will resist temptation and run away. A heart that is seeking after the Lord, who desires to please him, who loves him supremely.

Prayer

God, make Your presence more real to me than any temptation. Help me find such joy in You that running toward You becomes my first response. Thank You for the freedom found in pursuing You. Amen.
