Please check out Understanding Sovereign Omnipotence: Lessons from Jeremiah’s Faith for a fuller look at Jeremiah 32 and God’s Sovereignty and Omnipotence.
A Seemingly Foolish Investment
In 1867, the U.S. purchased Alaska for $7.2 million—a deal mocked as “Seward’s Folly.” Yet, Alaska became a source of immense resources and strategic value, proving its worth over time. Similarly, in Jeremiah 32, the prophet made what seemed to be a foolish investment—buying land in a city on the brink of destruction.
Jeremiah’s Land Purchase (Jeremiah 32:1-15)
While under house arrest, Jeremiah obeyed God’s command to buy land from his cousin Hanamel in Anathoth, despite the looming Babylonian invasion. He recorded the transaction carefully, symbolizing God’s promise of restoration. Though exile was near, God assured that one day, property would again be bought and sold in the land (Jeremiah 32:15).
Jeremiah’s Prayer and Faith (Jeremiah 32:17-25)
Jeremiah’s prayer reveals two key attributes of God: His sovereignty and omnipotence. He declared, “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!” (Jeremiah 32:17). This trust in God’s power enabled Jeremiah to act in faith.
God’s Sovereignty in History
Just as God orchestrated Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and fulfilled His covenant warnings, He also promised restoration. Seventy years after exile, God stirred King Cyrus to allow Judah’s return (Ezra 1:1-4). The ultimate fulfillment of restoration will come through Jesus Christ, the righteous descendant of David (Jeremiah 33:14-17).
Application for Today
Jeremiah’s faith challenges us to trust God even in uncertain times. When circumstances seem bleak, we can act in faith, knowing God is sovereign and powerful. Like Jeremiah, we must obey God, trusting His promises despite what we see.
Reflection Questions:
- Would you have bought the field in Jeremiah’s situation? Why or why not?
- Have you ever obeyed God when it didn’t make sense at the time? What happened?
- How does knowing that God is sovereign and omnipotent help you in difficult times?
- Is there an area in your life that needs God’s restoration? Seek Him in prayer and trust His plan.
