Introduction
Have you ever wondered how we can truly worship a God we cannot see? This week’s sermon delved into John 9, exploring the story of a man born blind who encounters Jesus and gains not only physical sight but also spiritual insight. This transformative experience teaches us profound lessons about faith, worship, and the power of God in our lives.
The Context: A Man Born Blind
Why Was He Born Blind?
In John 9:1-2, Jesus and His disciples encounter a man who was blind from birth. The disciples ask, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” This question reflects a common belief of the time that physical ailments were a direct result of sin. Jesus, however, redirects their focus, stating, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:3).
The Healing Miracle
Jesus then performs a miracle. He spits on the ground, makes mud with the saliva, and puts it on the man’s eyes. He instructs the man to wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man obeys and returns with his sight restored (John 9:6-7). This act not only heals the man’s physical blindness but sets the stage for a deeper revelation.
The Reaction: Questioning and Doubt
Neighbors and Pharisees
The man’s neighbors and those who had seen him begging are astonished. Some doubt that he is the same person, while others question how he gained his sight. The man simply replies, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see” (John 9:11).
The Pharisees’ Interrogation
The Pharisees, skeptical and divided, interrogate the man. They are more concerned about the fact that Jesus healed on the Sabbath than the miracle itself. The man boldly declares, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (John 9:25). His testimony challenges their rigid beliefs and exposes their spiritual blindness.
The Revelation: Seeing Jesus Clearly
Jesus Finds the Man
After being cast out by the Pharisees, Jesus finds the man and asks, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” The man, now seeing Jesus for the first time, responds, “Who is he, sir? Tell me so that I may believe in him.” Jesus reveals Himself, and the man declares, “Lord, I believe,” and worships Him (John 9:35-38).
Spiritual Insight
This story illustrates that true worship stems from a clear understanding of who Jesus is. The man’s physical healing is a metaphor for spiritual enlightenment. While the Pharisees could see physically, they were spiritually blind. The man, once blind, now sees Jesus clearly and worships Him wholeheartedly.
Life Application
Deepening Our Worship
To worship Jesus sincerely and deeply, we must see Him clearly. This involves:
1. **Spending Time with Him**: Like the disciples, we need to follow Jesus closely, learning from His teachings and experiencing His presence.
2. **Listening to His Word**: Engage with Scripture and allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate its truths.
3. **Practicing Solitude**: Limit distractions to hear His voice and follow His leading.
4. **Suffering with Him**: Understand His sacrifice and love by sharing in His sufferings.
5. **Asking for Revelation**: Pray for a deeper understanding of who Jesus is.
Questions for Reflection
1. How can I spend more time with Jesus this week?
2. What distractions do I need to limit to hear His voice more clearly?
3. How can I share in Jesus’ sufferings to understand His love more deeply?
4. Am I willing to ask Jesus to reveal more of Himself to me?
Conclusion
The story of the blind man in John 9 challenges us to seek a deeper, clearer vision of Jesus. As we grow in our understanding of who He is, our worship will become more sincere and profound. This week, let us pray, “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, I want to see You,” and take steps to deepen our relationship with Him.

By reflecting on these questions and applying these principles, we can move from spiritual blindness to a place of true worship, just like the man who was healed by Jesus. Let us strive to see Jesus clearly and worship Him with all our hearts.
