Who Has the Holy Spirit?
Do all Christians have the Holy Spirit? Do we receive Him when we believe, or do we need another spiritual experience? The Bible gives us a surprisingly clear answer.
Everyone who belongs to Jesus has the Holy Spirit. Scripture teaches that believers receive the Spirit when they believe in Christ, and His presence reminds us that we belong to God.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you have the Holy Spirit, you’re not alone.
Christians from different church backgrounds sometimes answer questions about the Holy Spirit differently. Some talk about receiving the Holy Spirit when you become a Christian. Others emphasize a later experience called the “baptism in the Holy Spirit.” Some connect the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues, baptism, confirmation, or a particular spiritual experience.
That can leave an ordinary Christian wondering:
Do I have the Holy Spirit?
Thankfully, the Bible doesn’t leave us guessing.
Jesus gives us a helpful place to begin.
“The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
Notice the distinction Jesus makes.
The world doesn’t know Him.
But Jesus’ followers do.
The Bible doesn’t teach that every person is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is certainly at work in the world, but there is something unique about His relationship with those who belong to Jesus.
So who has the Holy Spirit?
Everyone Who Belongs to Jesus Has the Holy Spirit
Paul gives us one of the clearest answers anywhere in Scripture.
“And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”
Paul’s statement works in both directions.
If you don’t have the Spirit, you don’t belong to Christ.
If you belong to Christ, you have the Holy Spirit.
There isn’t a separate category in the New Testament for Christians who have Jesus but don’t have the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit isn’t an upgrade for advanced Christians.
You don’t receive Him because you’ve prayed enough, matured enough, become spiritual enough, or reached another level of Christianity.
The first question isn’t,
“Have I had the right spiritual experience?”
It’s, “Do I belong to Jesus?”
Maybe you’ve watched someone worship differently than you. Maybe you’ve heard someone’s dramatic testimony. Maybe you’ve seen someone exercise a spiritual gift you’ve never experienced.
And you’ve wondered, “Do they have something I don’t?”
If you belong to Jesus, you don’t have a lesser version of Christianity.
God has given you His Spirit.
We Receive the Holy Spirit When We Believe
So when does a Christian receive the Holy Spirit?
Paul gives us another remarkably straightforward statement.
“When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.”
Notice the words:
When you believed.
You heard the good news about Jesus. You trusted Him. And God gave you His Spirit.
Paul makes a similar statement in 1 Corinthians:
“For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body…”
The important word is all.
The Holy Spirit isn’t reserved for pastors, missionaries, unusually spiritual Christians, or people who have experienced a particular spiritual gift.
Every person who belongs to Christ has received the Spirit.
Do I Have to Speak in Tongues to Have the Holy Spirit?
This is where many people have questions.
Some Christian traditions have historically taught that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Christians continue to disagree about how certain spiritual gifts operate today, but there is an important distinction in 1 Corinthians 12 that we shouldn’t miss.
“We were ALL baptized by one Spirit.”
“Do all speak in tongues?”
The expected answer to Paul’s second question is no.
Put those two statements together:
Whatever conclusions Christians reach about particular spiritual gifts, no single spiritual gift can be the test of whether someone has the Holy Spirit.
Your confidence doesn’t have to rest on whether you’ve had someone else’s experience.
It can rest on God’s promise.
The Holy Spirit Reminds Us That We Belong to God
The Holy Spirit’s presence means more than simply being able to say, “I have the Holy Spirit.”
His presence tells us something about our relationship with God.
“The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
This connects beautifully with something Jesus said immediately after promising the Holy Spirit.
“I will not leave you as orphans.” — John 14:18
Jesus says: You won’t be orphans.
Paul says: You’ve received the Spirit of adoption.
The Spirit’s presence says: You belong to God.
Ephesians 1 even describes the Holy Spirit as God’s seal and a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.
God hasn’t saved His people and then left them wondering whether they really belong to Him.
He has given them His Spirit.
What If I Don’t Feel the Holy Spirit?
Our feelings change.
Some days you may feel incredibly close to God. Other days your prayers feel dry. Sometimes worship deeply moves you. Other times you don’t feel much of anything.
You may even go through seasons when you wonder:
Does God still love me?
Am I really His?
Why don’t I feel close to Him?
But God’s presence isn’t measured by the strength of our emotions.
Don’t measure God’s presence by your feelings.
Trust His promise.
That doesn’t mean spiritual experiences or emotions are bad. God created us with emotions, and there can be moments when our awareness of His presence is especially powerful.
But our assurance can’t depend on reproducing a particular feeling.
It depends on Christ and what He has done for us.
John Wesley and a “Strangely Warmed” Heart
John Wesley knew something about struggling with assurance.
Wesley was already deeply religious. He was an Anglican minister, had studied at Oxford, prayed, fasted, studied Scripture, and had even crossed the Atlantic as a missionary.
Yet underneath all that religious activity, Wesley wrestled with whether he was truly trusting Christ.
On May 24, 1738, Wesley attended a Christian gathering on Aldersgate Street in London. As someone read from Martin Luther’s introduction to Romans, Wesley later described what happened with a memorable phrase:
“I felt my heart
strangely warmed.”
But the most important part of Wesley’s experience wasn’t that he felt warm.
It was what he became assured of.
He was trusting Christ alone for salvation.
The gospel had become intensely personal:
Christ died for my sins.
I belong to Him.
You don’t need to reproduce Wesley’s experience.
Your heart doesn’t have to feel “strangely warmed.”
You don’t need someone else’s emotions, testimony, or spiritual gift.
Where are you looking for assurance that you belong to God?
Your performance? Your feelings? A spiritual experience? A particular spiritual gift? Or Jesus Christ and what He has done for you?
How Can I Know If I Have the Holy Spirit?
That means Christians don’t have to spend their lives chasing what God has already given them.
The better question isn’t:
“How can I get the Holy Spirit?”
It’s:
“How can I live in dependence upon the Holy Spirit who already lives in me?”
Learn to Live With the God Who Lives in You
Following Jesus isn’t simply doing religious things for a God who is far away.
If you belong to Christ:
God’s Spirit lives in you.
So begin learning to live consciously aware of His presence.
When you open your Bible:
“Holy Spirit, help me understand Your Word and obey what You show me.”
When you pray:
Remember that you aren’t trying to get God’s attention. He is already present.
When you’re tempted:
Remember that you aren’t fighting sin alone.
When you’re afraid:
Remember Jesus’ promise: “I will not leave you as orphans.”
Before your feet hit the floor each morning, acknowledge God’s presence.
“Father, thank You that I belong to Jesus. Thank You that Your Spirit lives in me. Help me walk with You today.”
Not because those words make the Holy Spirit show up.
He’s already there.
You’re simply learning to live aware of the God who lives in you.
Everyone who belongs to Jesus
has the Holy Spirit.
You don’t need to chase someone else’s spiritual experience to prove that God has accepted you.
If you have trusted Christ, God has given you His Spirit.
You aren’t an orphan.
You are God’s child.
And the Holy Spirit lives in you.
