Luke 17:1–37

Jesus Calls Us to Live with Faith and Gratitude

A Guided Journey Through Scripture

Following Jesus with Faith, Humility, and Gratitude

Jesus begins by teaching His disciples about the seriousness of causing others to stumble into sin and the responsibility to forgive those who repent. When the apostles ask Him to increase their faith, Jesus reminds them that even faith as small as a mustard seed is significant when placed in God. He then uses an illustration about a servant to teach that obedience should flow from humble devotion rather than a desire for recognition or reward.

As Jesus travels toward Jerusalem, ten men suffering from leprosy cry out to Him for mercy. Jesus tells them to show themselves to the priests, and they are cleansed as they go. Yet only one returns to praise God and thank Jesus. Remarkably, this grateful man is a Samaritan. His response highlights the importance of recognizing God’s mercy and responding with genuine faith and gratitude.

The chapter concludes with Jesus answering questions about the coming of God’s kingdom. He explains that the kingdom is already present among them in His ministry, while also teaching His disciples about the future revelation of the Son of Man. Using examples from the days of Noah and Lot, Jesus warns against becoming so absorbed in ordinary life that we neglect what matters eternally. As you read, consider how your faith, forgiveness, gratitude, and readiness reflect your relationship with Jesus.

THE BIG IDEA

Jesus calls us to live with genuine faith, extend forgiveness, serve with humility, respond to God’s mercy with gratitude, and remain prepared for His coming.
