Luke 15:1–32

Jesus Seeks and Welcomes the Lost

A Guided Journey Through Scripture

Discovering God’s Heart for the Lost

As tax collectors and sinners gather around Jesus to hear Him teach, the Pharisees and teachers of the law complain that He welcomes sinners and eats with them. In response, Jesus tells three parables that reveal God’s heart toward those who are lost and the joy that accompanies their repentance.

Through the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin, Jesus illustrates the value of what has been lost and the joy of finding it again. He explains that heaven rejoices when even one sinner repents, challenging the religious leaders’ attitude toward the very people God desires to restore.

Jesus then tells the story of a father and his two sons. The younger son leaves home, wastes his inheritance, and eventually returns in repentance. His father welcomes him with compassion and celebration, while the older son responds with resentment. As you read, consider what these parables reveal about God’s grace, the importance of repentance, and the attitudes we should have toward those who are far from Him.

THE BIG IDEA

Jesus reveals God’s gracious heart toward the lost, calling sinners to repentance and inviting us to share in the joy of their restoration rather than responding with self-righteousness.
