Luke 9:1–62
Jesus Calls Us to See Who He Is and Follow Him
A Guided Journey Through Scripture
UNDERSTANDING LUKE 9
Recognizing Jesus and Responding to His Call
Jesus sends His twelve apostles to proclaim the kingdom of God and heal the sick. He then feeds a crowd of thousands with only five loaves and two fish, demonstrating His power and provision.
As the chapter unfolds, Jesus asks His disciples an important question: Who do they say He is? Peter identifies Him as God’s Messiah, and Jesus begins explaining that He must suffer, be rejected, die, and rise again. On the mountain, His glory is revealed as the Father’s voice directs the disciples to listen to His Son.
Jesus then teaches that following Him requires humility, self-denial, and wholehearted commitment. As He sets His face toward Jerusalem, He challenges those who want to follow Him to consider the cost. As you read, pay attention to what Jesus reveals about His identity and what He asks of those who call themselves His disciples.
Jesus is God’s promised Messiah, and recognizing who He is calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him wholeheartedly.
