🎧 Philippians 1:1–11
Listen as we walk through gospel partnership, God’s continuing work in us, Paul’s prayer, growing love, and learning to make choices that honor Jesus.
What Should You Remember?
God is at work making us more like Jesus, and He calls us to grow and participate together in the mission of the gospel.
How Philippians 1:1–11 Fits Together
Paul’s opening is more than a friendly hello. It introduces several ideas that will continue throughout Philippians.
We Follow Jesus Together
One of the first things Paul does is thank God for the Philippian believers. When he thinks about them, he remembers how they have partnered with him in the gospel.
That word partnership is important.
The Philippians were not simply watching Paul do ministry. They were participating with him. They prayed, gave, served, supported gospel ministry, and shared in the work God was doing.
You Can Participate in the Gospel
You do not have to be a pastor, missionary, or adult before God can use you. Every follower of Jesus can participate in His mission.
- Pray for someone who needs Jesus.
- Encourage another follower of Jesus.
- Serve someone who needs help.
- Support missionaries and gospel ministry.
- Invite someone to church or your student ministry.
- Tell someone what Jesus has done in your life.
God Isn’t Finished With You
Paul is confident that the God who began a good work in the Philippians will continue His work in them.
That’s an encouraging truth because trusting Jesus does not mean you instantly become everything God wants you to be.
You are still growing.
You will have victories, and you will make mistakes. You will understand things about God tomorrow that you do not understand today. As you continue following Jesus, God keeps shaping your attitudes, choices, priorities, relationships, and desires.
Spiritual growth is not simply you trying harder to make yourself better. The God who saves you continues working in you as you trust and obey Him.
Two Important Ideas in This Passage
Partnership
Partnership means sharing or participating together in something. The Philippians did not simply believe the gospel; they joined Paul in helping the gospel move forward.
Discernment
Discernment is the ability to recognize what is right, wise, and pleasing to God. Paul wants their love to grow so that they become better at recognizing what honors Jesus.
Growing Love Makes Wiser Choices
Paul does not simply tell the Philippians that he cares about them. He prays for them.
He wants their love to keep growing — but not only as an emotion. He prays that their love will grow with knowledge and discernment.
Why does that matter? Because you make choices every day.
Following Jesus is not simply memorizing a list of rules. As you know Jesus and understand God’s Word more deeply, you learn to recognize what honors Him.
Your love becomes wiser.
Your choices become more like Jesus.
Your life increasingly shows that you belong to Him.
Growing Until Jesus Returns
Paul’s prayer looks beyond today. He wants these believers to continue growing so their lives will honor Christ all the way until the day of Christ.
In other words: keep following Jesus.
We pray.
We obey.
We love people.
We serve.
We make wise choices.
We participate in His mission.
And through all of it, God continues His work in us.
What Is the Gospel Producing?
Philippians 1:1–11 gives us a picture of what the gospel begins producing in God’s people.
The gospel creates partnership.
We follow Jesus and participate in His mission together.
The gospel produces growth.
God continues working in us and making us more like Jesus.
The gospel changes how we love.
Our love grows with knowledge and discernment so that we learn
to choose what honors God.
And Paul’s example reminds us: growing followers of Jesus pray for other people to grow too.
Before You Move On…
