How to Use This Commentary
Revelation 21:1–8 describes the eternal state—the new heaven, the new earth, the New Jerusalem, and the eternal dwelling place of God with His redeemed people.
Read this passage in six major movements: (1) the creation of the new heaven and new earth (v.1), (2) the arrival of the New Jerusalem (v.2), (3) God dwelling with His people forever (v.3), (4) the removal of sin, sorrow, pain, and death (v.4), (5) God making all things new (vv.5–7), and (6) the final contrast between the redeemed and the condemned (v.8).
Revelation 21 is one of the most hope-filled passages in all of Scripture because it reveals the future home of believers and the complete restoration of creation.
Key: God will create a new and perfect eternal world where His redeemed people will dwell in His presence forever.
Deep down,
every person longs for a world without suffering.
A world without funerals.
Without cancer.
Without broken relationships.
Without anxiety.
Without violence.
Without death.
We try to build better lives,
better homes,
better systems,
better societies.
Yet every generation eventually discovers the same painful truth:
This world is broken.
Revelation 21 gives believers a glimpse beyond the brokenness.
John sees not merely a repaired world,
but an entirely new creation.
A world where death no longer exists.
Where tears disappear forever.
Where pain cannot enter.
Where God Himself dwells openly with His people.
Scripture does not end with humanity losing Eden.
It ends with God dwelling among His redeemed people in a greater paradise forever.
Revelation 21 reminds weary believers:
The story does not end with Babylon,
judgment,
war,
or death.
It ends with restoration.
God truly will make all things new.

“There is no longer any sea.” (v.1)
The new creation is dramatically different from the old.
Meaning: The old order marked by separation, chaos, and curse is gone.

“The holy city, new Jerusalem…” (v.2)
John sees the eternal city descending from heaven.
Meaning: God prepares a permanent dwelling place for His people.
Application: Heaven is a real place prepared by God.
“As a bride adorned for her husband…” (v.2)
The city is pictured with beauty and joy.
Meaning: God’s redeemed people are prepared for eternal fellowship with Him.
Application: Salvation ultimately leads to eternal union with God.
“The tabernacle of God is among men…” (v.3)
God dwells openly with His people.
Meaning: The separation caused by sin is removed forever.
Application: The greatest blessing of heaven is God Himself.
“He will wipe away every tear…” (v.4)
All sorrow ends forever.
Meaning: Pain, grief, and suffering are permanently removed.
Application: Believers can endure present suffering with eternal hope.
“There will no longer be any death…” (v.4)
Death is finally defeated.
Meaning: The curse of sin is completely removed.
Application: Christians have victory over death through Christ.
“I am making all things new.” (v.5)
God renews creation completely.
Meaning: God’s restoration is total and perfect.
Application: God finishes what He starts.
“It is done.” (v.6)
God’s redemptive plan reaches completion.
Meaning: Sin, death, and rebellion are fully defeated.
Application: God’s promises never fail.
“The Alpha and the Omega…” (v.6)
God rules over all history.
Meaning: God began history and brings it to completion.
Application: The future is secure in God’s hands.
“The water of life…” (v.6)
God freely gives eternal life.
Meaning: Salvation is received by grace.
Application: Anyone who thirsts for salvation must come to Christ.
“He who overcomes…” (v.7)
Believers inherit eternal blessing.
Meaning: Those who trust Christ belong to God forever.
Application: True faith perseveres.
“The cowardly and unbelieving…” (v.8)
Unrepentant sinners face eternal judgment.
Meaning: Those who reject Christ remain under condemnation.
Application: Eternity depends on what a person does with Jesus.
A Deeper Dive: The Eternal State and the New Creation
1) Revelation’s Final Movement
Revelation 21 begins the final section of the Bible.
👉 Satan has been defeated.
Death has been judged.
The Great White Throne judgment is complete.
Now God reveals the eternal state.
Scripture moves from creation,
to fall,
to redemption,
to final restoration.
2) A New Heaven and New Earth
John sees:
“a new heaven and a new earth.”
👉 The word “new” means new in quality,
not merely newer in time.
This is not simply a repaired version of the present world.
God creates an entirely new eternal creation untouched by sin.
3) The Old Creation Passes Away
Revelation says:
“the first heaven and the first earth passed away.”
👉 The fallen creation cannot continue into eternity.
Sin corrupted the original creation,
so God removes it entirely.
The curse introduced in Genesis 3 is finally gone forever.
4) No More Sea
John notes:
“there is no longer any sea.”
👉 This likely points to dramatic changes in the structure of creation.
Throughout Scripture,
the sea often symbolizes chaos,
danger,
separation,
and unrest.
In the eternal state,
those realities disappear forever.
5) The New Jerusalem
John sees:
“the holy city, new Jerusalem.”
👉 Heaven is not merely an abstract spiritual experience.
Scripture presents it as a real place prepared by God for His people.
The New Jerusalem becomes the eternal dwelling place of the redeemed.
6) A Bride Adorned
The city appears:
“as a bride adorned for her husband.”
👉 Revelation ends with wedding imagery because redemption ultimately leads to eternal union with God.
The bride imagery highlights beauty,
joy,
purity,
and celebration.
7) The Greatest Blessing of Heaven
A loud voice declares:
“the tabernacle of God is among men.”
👉 The greatest treasure of heaven is not gold streets or gates of pearl.
It is the presence of God Himself.
Humanity lost unhindered fellowship with God in Eden.
Revelation 21 shows that fellowship restored forever.
8) God Dwells With His People
Revelation repeatedly emphasizes:
“He will dwell among them.”
👉 Throughout biblical history,
God’s presence was partially veiled.
In the tabernacle,
the temple,
and even in Christ’s earthly incarnation,
God’s glory was partially concealed.
But in the eternal state,
God dwells openly with His redeemed people forever.
9) Every Tear Removed
God Himself:
“will wipe away every tear.”
👉 Heaven contains no sorrow,
regret,
grief,
or heartbreak.
Every painful effect of sin disappears forever.
10) Death Is Gone Forever
Revelation says:
“there will no longer be any death.”
👉 Humanity’s greatest enemy is finally defeated.
No funerals.
No hospitals.
No cemeteries.
No separation.
Christ’s victory over death becomes fully realized forever.
11) No Mourning, Crying, or Pain
The old order of suffering passes away completely.
👉 Everything associated with the curse is removed.
Physical pain,
emotional pain,
and spiritual suffering disappear forever.
12) God Makes All Things New
God declares:
“I am making all things new.”
👉 God is not abandoning His creation plan.
He is restoring it perfectly.
The Bible begins with creation in Genesis.
It ends with new creation in Revelation.
13) “It Is Done”
God announces:
“It is done.”
👉 Redemption history reaches completion.
Every promise of God is fulfilled.
Every enemy is defeated.
God’s kingdom stands forever.
14) Alpha and Omega
God identifies Himself as:
“the Alpha and the Omega.”
👉 God rules over all of history.
He began creation,
guided redemption,
and brings history to its perfect conclusion.
15) The Water of Life
God offers:
“the water of life without cost.”
👉 Salvation is a free gift of grace.
Eternal life cannot be earned through works.
Those who thirst spiritually must come to Christ.
16) The Overcomers
Revelation promises:
“He who overcomes will inherit these things.”
👉 Overcomers are genuine believers who persevere in faith.
Their inheritance is eternal fellowship with God.
17) God’s Sons Forever
God declares:
“I will be his God and he will be My son.”
👉 Believers enjoy permanent covenant relationship with God forever.
Adoption reaches its fullest realization in eternity.
18) The Outcasts of Eternity
Revelation 21:8 contrasts the redeemed with the condemned.
👉 Those who reject Christ remain outside the eternal kingdom.
Their lives reveal unbelief through persistent rebellion against God.
The lake of fire remains the eternal destiny of all who refuse God’s grace.
19) Why Revelation 21 Matters
Revelation 21 gives believers hope in a broken world.
👉 Suffering is temporary.
The curse is temporary.
Tears are temporary.
But God’s kingdom is eternal.
The Christian story ends not with defeat,
but with eternal restoration in God’s presence.
