How to Use This Commentary
Revelation 19:1–10 shifts the focus from the destruction of Babylon to the celebration of heaven.
Read this passage in five major movements: (1) heaven’s hallelujahs over Babylon’s fall (vv.1–3), (2) worship around God’s throne (vv.4–5), (3) the announcement of God’s reign (v.6), (4) the marriage supper of the Lamb (vv.7–9), and (5) the call to worship God alone (v.10).
Revelation 19 reminds believers that history is moving toward celebration, victory, worship, and union with Christ.
Key: Heaven rejoices because evil has been judged, Christ’s kingdom is coming, and the marriage of the Lamb has arrived.
Revelation has been filled with judgment,
war,
death,
persecution,
darkness,
and destruction.
But Revelation 19 changes the atmosphere.
Heaven erupts in praise.
Four times the word “Hallelujah” rings through heaven —
the only time the word appears in the New Testament.
Why?
Because Babylon has fallen.
Because evil is being removed.
Because God’s justice has triumphed.
Because Christ’s kingdom is about to be established.
And because the marriage of the Lamb has come.
Revelation 19 reminds believers that history is not moving toward chaos.
It is moving toward a wedding.
The church is not abandoned.
The Bridegroom is coming.
Jesus Christ will reign.
Evil will end.
The saints will rejoice.
And worship will fill eternity.
A Quick Look: Revelation 19:1–10
Big idea: Heaven rejoices because God has judged Babylon, established His reign, and prepared the marriage supper of the Lamb.
Why this matters: Believers can endure suffering and opposition knowing Christ ultimately wins.
Key truth: God’s justice is true and righteous, and His kingdom will fully come.
Bottom line: History is moving toward the victorious reign of Christ and the eternal celebration of His people.

A Deeper Dive: Heaven’s Hallelujahs and the Marriage of the Lamb
1) Revelation Shifts From Earth to Heaven
Since Revelation 6,
the focus has largely been on earth and God’s judgments during the Tribulation.
Revelation 19 shifts the scene back to heaven.
👉 Heaven rejoices because Babylon has fallen and Christ’s kingdom is about to be established.
What caused mourning on earth in Revelation 18 now produces worship in heaven.
2) The Four Hallelujahs
Revelation 19 contains four “Hallelujahs.”
👉 This is the only chapter in the New Testament where the word appears.
“Hallelujah” means:
“Praise Yahweh”
or
“Praise the Lord.”
Heaven erupts in worship because God’s justice has triumphed.
3) Salvation, Glory, and Power Belong to God
Heaven praises God because salvation,
glory,
and power belong to Him.
👉 God alone deserves ultimate worship.
Babylon sought glory for herself.
God alone possesses true glory and sovereign power.
4) God’s Judgments Are True and Righteous
Heaven celebrates because God’s judgments are perfectly just.
👉 God never judges unfairly.
Revelation repeatedly emphasizes that divine judgment is righteous,
holy,
and deserved.
Babylon corrupted the earth and persecuted God’s people.
God’s judgment answers that evil.
5) God Avenges His Servants
Heaven praises God because He avenges the blood of His servants.
👉 God has not ignored persecution,
martyrdom,
or injustice.
Throughout Revelation,
believers cried out for justice.
Now heaven celebrates because justice has finally come.
6) Babylon’s Smoke Rises Forever
Babylon’s smoke rises forever and ever.
👉 This symbolizes the permanence of God’s judgment.
Babylon’s rebellion is finished.
The system that opposed God and corrupted the world will never rise again.
7) The Twenty-Four Elders and Four Living Creatures Worship
The twenty-four elders and four living creatures fall before God’s throne in worship.
👉 Revelation consistently portrays heaven as centered on worship.
Their response reminds readers that the proper response to God’s justice and sovereignty is reverent worship.
8) “Amen. Hallelujah!”
The heavenly worshipers cry:
“Amen. Hallelujah!”
👉 “Amen” means:
“So be it”
or
“It is true.”
Heaven fully agrees with God’s judgments and praises Him for them.
9) All God’s Servants Are Called to Praise Him
A voice from the throne calls:
“Give praise to our God.”
👉 Every believer joins the worship.
The small and the great alike praise God.
Heaven has no spiritual celebrities.
All the redeemed exist to glorify God.
10) The Sound of Heaven’s Worship
John describes heaven’s praise like:
- many waters
- mighty thunder
👉 The worship of heaven is majestic,
powerful,
and overwhelming.
Heaven is not silent or lifeless.
It is filled with joyful worship centered on God.
11) “The Lord Our God, the Almighty, Reigns”
Heaven declares:
“The Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.”
👉 God has always ruled sovereignly,
but now His kingdom openly triumphs over evil.
Babylon has fallen.
Antichrist’s empire is collapsing.
Christ’s reign is about to be visibly established.
12) The Marriage of the Lamb
One of the greatest images in Revelation is introduced:
“the marriage of the Lamb.”
👉 Jesus Christ is the Bridegroom,
and His people are His bride.
Scripture frequently uses marriage imagery to describe God’s relationship with His people.
Revelation 19 celebrates the final union between Christ and His redeemed people.
13) Ancient Jewish Wedding Background
Ancient Jewish weddings often involved:
- betrothal
- preparation
- presentation
- celebration
👉 Revelation uses this imagery to describe Christ and the church.
The church is presently betrothed to Christ and awaiting the final celebration.
14) The Bride Has Made Herself Ready
The bride is prepared for the wedding.
👉 God graciously sanctifies and purifies His people.
Believers do not prepare themselves apart from grace,
yet genuine salvation produces holiness and faithfulness.
15) Fine Linen, Bright and Clean
The bride is clothed in fine linen,
bright and clean.
👉 The linen represents the righteous acts of the saints.
Salvation is by grace alone,
yet transformed lives produce righteous living.
Revelation presents holiness not as legalism,
but as preparation for union with Christ.
16) The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
Heaven announces:
“Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”
👉 This is one of Revelation’s seven beatitudes.
The marriage supper symbolizes celebration,
joy,
fellowship,
and eternal communion with Christ.
Revelation reminds believers that eternity is not merely survival after judgment —
it is joyful fellowship with Jesus forever.
17) “These Are True Words of God”
The angel assures John that these promises are trustworthy.
👉 God’s promises are certain.
To persecuted believers,
the victory of Christ may seem distant.
Revelation reminds readers that God’s kingdom is not wishful thinking.
It is guaranteed reality.
18) John Falls to Worship the Angel
Overwhelmed by the vision,
John falls before the angel.
👉 Even faithful believers can misdirect worship when overwhelmed by spiritual experiences.
The angel immediately corrects him.
19) Worship God Alone
The angel commands:
“Worship God.”
👉 Worship belongs exclusively to God.
Angels,
leaders,
teachers,
experiences,
and spiritual beings must never replace devotion to God Himself.
20) The Testimony of Jesus Is the Spirit of Prophecy
The angel concludes:
“The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
👉 The central focus of biblical prophecy is Jesus Christ.
Revelation is not ultimately about beasts,
charts,
dates,
or speculation.
It is about the triumph,
glory,
reign,
and worship of Jesus Christ.
- Revelation 19 shifts from earth’s mourning to heaven’s worship
- Four hallelujahs celebrate God’s victory and justice
- God’s judgments are perfectly righteous and true
- Babylon’s destruction is permanent and irreversible

Bottom Line (Revelation 19:1–10)
