Small group discussion questions and accountability tools designed to help disciples grow in their love for God, connect with others, serve others, and share the gospel.
These questions were created to accompany The Gospels Discipleship Journal, but they can also be used by any small group, discipleship group, family, or individual studying these passages.
This Set’s Big Idea
Jesus calls His disciples to listen carefully, pray dependently, treasure God above possessions, trust the Father instead of worrying, and live ready for His return.
As you read, watch how Jesus commends Mary’s attention to His word, teaches His followers to pray, warns against greed, comforts anxious hearts, and calls servants to be faithful and ready.
How to Use These Questions
These questions are a guide, not a script. You do not need to answer every question. The goal is to help your group engage Scripture, encourage one another, and take a clear next step of obedience.
Before meeting, encourage everyone to complete the set’s readings and record at least one observation and one application from the passage using PETS or another preferred Bible study method.
Suggested Small Group Meeting Flow
Use this as a flexible guide for a 1–1.5 hour weekly gathering. Adjust as needed for your group.
Meet up, catch up, and reconnect from the week.
Open in prayer and ask God to use His Word.
Share PETS insights from the week’s readings. Let everyone share briefly.
Discuss selected passage questions. The facilitator should choose a few, not all.
Use a few Heart Check questions for honest accountability and encouragement.
Share prayer requests, praises, and close in prayer.
Leader Tips
- You do not need to answer every question.
- Choose the questions most relevant to your group.
- Focus on application, not just information.
- Encourage everyone to participate, but do not force anyone to share.
- Leave enough time for prayer and honest encouragement.

Icebreaker
- When life becomes busy, what helps you stay focused on what matters most?
Digging Into the Text
- What contrast do you see between Mary and Martha? What does Jesus say is the “better” choice?
- What does the Lord’s Prayer teach us about God’s character and our dependence on Him?
- Jesus encourages persistent prayer. Why do you think persistence is an important part of our relationship with God?
- What warning does the Parable of the Rich Fool give about wealth and success?
- How does Jesus’ teaching about worry challenge the way we normally think about security and the future?
- What does it practically look like to “seek first the kingdom of God” in everyday life?
- Why does Jesus repeatedly tell His followers to stay ready for His return?
- Across these passages, what competes most for our attention, trust, and devotion today?
Leader Note
Every passage in this set asks the same fundamental question: What has first place in your heart? Jesus calls His followers to prioritize His presence, depend on the Father through prayer, value eternal treasure over earthly wealth, trust instead of worry, and live each day ready to faithfully serve Him.

- Where is Jesus inviting you to slow down and spend more time with Him?
- What area of your life requires greater trust in God’s provision instead of anxiety?
- How is God challenging your priorities, possessions, or ambitions through these passages?
Connect with Others
- Who can encourage you to remain focused on Christ when life becomes busy or distracting?
- How can this group pray more intentionally for one another this week?
- How can we help one another live with an eternal perspective rather than a temporary one?

- How can you use your time, abilities, or possessions to serve God’s kingdom this week?
- What is one practical way you can faithfully steward what God has entrusted to you?
Share the Gospel
- How can trusting God’s provision instead of worrying become a testimony to those around you?
- Who is one person you can intentionally pray for and move toward with the hope of Jesus this week?
Closing Challenge
Jesus calls His disciples to listen carefully, pray dependently, treasure God above possessions, trust the Father instead of worrying, and live ready for His return.
These passages continually point us away from distraction, anxiety, and self-reliance toward wholehearted dependence on God.

How to Use These Questions
These questions are meant to help the group move beyond information and into honest discipleship. Use them with grace, humility, and confidentiality. The goal is not shame, but spiritual growth as we help one another follow Jesus.
Love God
- How has your time in God’s Word and prayer been this week?
- Have you made time to sit at Jesus’ feet, or has busyness crowded Him out?
- What worry, fear, or desire have you struggled to surrender to God?
- Are your priorities reflecting God’s kingdom or your own comfort and security?
Connect with Others
- Have your relationships reflected patience, generosity, and encouragement this week?
- Is there anyone you need to forgive, encourage, reconcile with, or pray for?
- Have you invited someone to pray with you or share a burden you have been carrying?
Serve Others
- How have you used your time, gifts, or resources to serve others this week?
- Have greed, busyness, comfort, or worry kept you from faithfully serving God or others?
Share the Gospel
- Did your trust in God create an opportunity to talk about Jesus this week?
- If so, what happened?
- If not, who is one person you can intentionally pray for and move toward this week?
Honest Accountability
- What distraction, worry, greed, fear, or hidden sin has been most difficult this week?
- Is there anything hidden that needs to be brought into the light?
- What is one specific way the group can pray for you today?
Leader Reminder: The goal is not merely to talk about priorities, prayer, worry, and possessions, but to help one another live with Christ-centered attention, dependent prayer, kingdom treasure, faithful stewardship, and readiness for Jesus’ return.
