Revelation 12:13-18: The Unseen War Moves to Earth

How to Use This Commentary

Revelation 12:13–18 describes Satan’s furious persecution of Israel and God’s supernatural protection of His people during the Great Tribulation.

Read it in three movements: (1) Satan’s pursuit of the woman (vv.13–14), (2) God’s protection from the dragon’s attack (vv.15–16), and (3) Satan turning his rage toward believers (v.17).

Key: Satan fiercely attacks God’s people, but God sovereignly preserves His purposes and promises.

Throughout history,
the Jewish people have faced repeated hatred, persecution, exile, and attempted destruction.

From Pharaoh,
to Haman,
to Herod,
to Hitler,
the story often feels tragically repetitive.

Revelation 12 helps explain why.

👉 Behind human hatred stands a deeper spiritual war.

Satan has long opposed Israel because:

  • the Messiah came through Israel
  • God made covenant promises to Israel
  • Christ will one day reign from Jerusalem

Revelation 12 reveals Satan’s final desperate assault against God’s covenant purposes during the Great Tribulation.

Yet even here,
in one of the darkest moments in Revelation,
God remains fully sovereign.

The dragon rages.

The woman flees.

The world grows darker.

But God protects His people,
preserves His promises,
and guarantees Satan’s ultimate defeat.

A Quick Look: Revelation 12:13–18

Big idea: Satan launches a furious attack against Israel and God’s people during the Great Tribulation.

Why this matters: Spiritual warfare is real, but God faithfully protects and preserves His people.

Key truth: Satan cannot stop God’s covenant promises or overthrow Christ’s kingdom.

Bottom line: Though Satan rages against God’s people, God remains sovereign and His victory is certain.

A Simple Explanation (Revelation 12:13–18)

“He persecuted the woman…” (v.13)
Satan attacks Israel after being cast out of heaven.
Meaning: Satan fiercely opposes God’s covenant people.
Application: Believers should not be surprised by spiritual opposition.

“The two wings of the great eagle…” (v.14)
God protects Israel and provides a place of refuge.
Meaning: God sovereignly preserves His people during tribulation.
Application: God remains faithful even in times of great suffering.

“The serpent poured water like a river…” (vv.15–16)
Satan launches another attack against Israel, but God intervenes.
Meaning: Satan’s efforts cannot overcome God’s protection.
Application: God is able to deliver His people from overwhelming danger.

“The dragon was enraged…” (v.17)
Satan turns his fury toward believers who follow Jesus.
Meaning: Satan opposes all who belong to Christ.
Application: Faithful believers must endure spiritual warfare with perseverance.

A Deeper Dive: Satan’s War Against Israel and God’s People

1) Satan’s Hatred of Israel

Revelation 12:13 continues the story after Satan is cast out of heaven.

John says:
“He persecuted the woman.”

👉 The woman still represents Israel.

Revelation 12 helps explain the long spiritual hostility against the Jewish people throughout history.

Satan has repeatedly attempted to:

  • destroy Israel
  • stop the messianic line
  • nullify God’s covenant promises
  • prevent Christ’s kingdom

Throughout Scripture,
Satan works through earthly rulers and kingdoms to oppose God’s redemptive plan.

2) The Great Tribulation Intensifies

Revelation 12 focuses on the final three-and-a-half years of the Tribulation.

Jesus described this period as:
“great tribulation” (Matthew 24:21).

👉 Satan knows his time is short and unleashes intense persecution.

Revelation repeatedly describes this period as:

  • 1,260 days
  • 42 months
  • time, times, and half a time

All refer to the same final three-and-a-half-year period before Christ’s return.

3) The Abomination of Desolation

This persecution intensifies after the Antichrist breaks his covenant with Israel.

Jesus warned about this in Matthew 24,
referring back to Daniel’s prophecy concerning:
“the abomination of desolation.”

👉 At the midpoint of the Tribulation,
Antichrist reveals his true nature.

What began as political protection becomes violent persecution.

Satan’s kingdom openly turns against God’s people.

4) The Woman Flees Into the Wilderness

Revelation says the woman flees into the wilderness to a place prepared by God.

👉 God Himself provides refuge and protection.

This imagery echoes Israel’s exodus from Egypt.

Just as God delivered Israel from Pharaoh,
He again preserves a believing remnant during the Tribulation.

Revelation reminds readers that:

  • God preserves His covenant purposes
  • God protects His people
  • God’s promises cannot fail

5) “The Wings of the Great Eagle”

The “two wings of the great eagle” symbolize God’s deliverance and protection.

👉 This is likely symbolic imagery,
not a literal eagle.

The imagery comes from passages like Exodus 19:4,
where God says He carried Israel “on eagles’ wings.”

Throughout Scripture,
wings often symbolize:

  • protection
  • care
  • shelter
  • swift deliverance

Revelation portrays God actively preserving His people in the midst of chaos.

6) A Future Refuge

Revelation does not specifically identify the wilderness refuge.

Some interpreters suggest Petra or regions east of Israel because of Old Testament connections to Edom, Moab, and Ammon.

👉 Scripture does not explicitly reveal the exact location.

The primary emphasis is not geography,
but divine protection.

God sovereignly preserves a remnant during Satan’s attack.

7) God Supernaturally Provides

Revelation says the woman is:
“nourished.”

👉 God sustains His people during tribulation.

This recalls:

  • manna in the wilderness
  • Elijah being fed during famine
  • God’s repeated provision throughout Scripture

Revelation consistently reminds believers that God remains fully in control even during global chaos.

8) The Flood From the Serpent

Satan next sends a flood after the woman.

👉 This likely symbolizes a massive destructive assault.

In the Old Testament,
flood imagery often represents:

  • war
  • destruction
  • invading armies
  • overwhelming trouble

Satan attempts another violent attack against God’s people.

9) The Earth Helps the Woman

Revelation says:
“the earth opened its mouth.”

👉 God once again intervenes supernaturally.

The imagery echoes Old Testament moments where God used the earth itself in judgment and deliverance.

Some connect this with the earthquakes that occur throughout Revelation.

Whatever the exact mechanism,
the point is clear:

Satan cannot destroy God’s people apart from God’s sovereign allowance.

10) Satan’s Rage Increases

After repeated failure,
the dragon becomes enraged.

👉 Satan’s fury intensifies because he cannot stop God’s plan.

Revelation repeatedly portrays Satan as:

  • deceptive
  • violent
  • destructive
  • filled with hatred toward God’s people

Yet every attack ultimately fails.

11) War Against the Rest of Her Children

Satan then turns to:
“the rest of her children.”

👉 This likely refers broadly to believers during the Tribulation.

Revelation describes them as those who:

  • keep the commandments of God
  • hold to the testimony of Jesus

Genuine believers remain faithful to Christ even under intense persecution.

12) The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

Revelation 12 reminds believers that spiritual warfare is not imaginary.

👉 Behind earthly events stands an invisible spiritual conflict.

Satan opposes:

  • truth
  • God’s kingdom
  • God’s people
  • the gospel

Yet Revelation also repeatedly reminds readers:

  • Satan is defeated
  • Christ reigns
  • God preserves His people
  • God’s promises stand secure

13) The Hope Beyond the Darkness

Revelation 12 contains intense suffering,
but it ultimately points toward hope.

👉 Satan’s rage is temporary.

Christ’s kingdom is eternal.

Revelation moves steadily toward:

  • Christ’s return
  • Satan’s defeat
  • Israel’s restoration
  • the establishment of God’s kingdom

Even during the darkest moments of tribulation,
God remains faithful to His covenant promises.

Deeper Dive Summary:
  • Satan launches a furious persecution against Israel
  • The final three-and-a-half years of the Tribulation are in view
  • The Antichrist breaks covenant and turns against Israel
  • God provides supernatural protection for a believing remnant
  • The wings of the eagle symbolize God’s deliverance
  • The wilderness refuge emphasizes divine preservation
  • Satan’s flood likely symbolizes overwhelming military assault
  • God intervenes and defeats Satan’s attacks
  • Satan then wages war against believers in Jesus
  • Spiritual warfare is real throughout human history
  • God remains sovereign and His kingdom victory is certain

Bottom Line (Revelation 12:13–18)

Satan fiercely opposes God’s people and covenant purposes, but God faithfully protects His people, preserves His promises, and guarantees Christ’s ultimate victory.
