How to Use This Commentary
Revelation 9:13–21 describes the sixth trumpet judgment, where a massive demonic army is released to bring unprecedented death upon the earth.
Read it in three movements: (1) the release of the four bound angels (vv.13–15), (2) the terrifying demonic army and worldwide slaughter (vv.16–19), and (3) humanity’s shocking refusal to repent (vv.20–21).
Key: Revelation reveals both the devastating consequences of sin and the terrifying hardness of the human heart apart from God’s grace.
One of the most sobering truths in Scripture is that judgment alone does not automatically produce repentance.
People often assume:
“If God would just show Himself clearly, everyone would believe.”
But Revelation shows something different.
Humanity experiences:
- catastrophic disasters
- demonic torment
- mass death
- supernatural judgment
- clear evidence of God’s power
Yet many still refuse to repent.
👉 The greatest human problem is not lack of evidence.
It is the rebellion of the human heart.
Revelation 9 is terrifying not only because millions die,
but because even after seeing such judgment,
humanity still clings to sin instead of turning to God.
A Quick Look: Revelation 9:13–21
Big idea: God releases a massive demonic judgment that kills one-third of humanity, yet many still refuse to repent.
Why this matters: Sin hardens the human heart apart from God’s saving grace.
Key truth: God’s judgment is both controlled and purposeful.
Bottom line: The greatest danger is not merely judgment itself, but a heart that continually refuses to turn to God.
A Simple Explanation (Revelation 9:13–21)
“Release the four angels…” (vv.13–15)
Four bound demons are released at God’s appointed time.
Meaning: God remains sovereign even over evil powers.
Application: Nothing happens outside God’s control.
“Two hundred million…” (v.16)
A massive demonic army advances across the earth.
Meaning: The judgment becomes global and devastating.
Application: Humanity cannot overcome spiritual evil apart from God.
“A third of mankind was killed…” (v.18)
Massive death spreads across the world.
Meaning: God’s wrath against sin is serious and real.
Application: Today is the time to repent and trust Christ.
“They did not repent…” (vv.20–21)
Survivors still reject God.
Meaning: Sin deeply hardens the human heart.
Application: We must not resist God’s call to repentance.
A Deeper Dive: Judgment and Human Rebellion
1) The Sixth Trumpet Sounds
The sixth trumpet introduces the second great “woe” judgment announced in Revelation 8:13.
The fifth trumpet brought torment without death.
👉 The sixth trumpet now brings massive worldwide slaughter.
The intensity of God’s judgment continues escalating as the Tribulation progresses.
2) The Voice from the Altar
John hears a voice coming from the four horns of the golden altar before God.
Earlier in Revelation,
this altar was associated with:
- prayer
- worship
- intercession
- the cries of martyred believers
👉 Now the altar associated with mercy becomes connected with judgment.
Revelation repeatedly reminds readers:
God’s patience will not last forever.
Those who continually reject grace eventually face judgment.
3) The Four Bound Angels
The voice commands:
“Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”
These are not holy angels,
but fallen angels or demons,
since Scripture never describes faithful angels as bound.
👉 Even powerful demons remain under God’s authority.
They are released only at the exact time God has determined.
Revelation emphasizes that God’s judgments are not chaotic or accidental.
The mention of the Euphrates is significant throughout biblical history.
The region was connected with:
- Eden (Genesis 2:14)
- Babylon
- human rebellion
- false religion
- Israel’s enemies
It becomes a fitting location for this demonic judgment.
4) Prepared for God’s Exact Time
John says these demons had been prepared:
“for the hour and day and month and year.”
👉 God’s sovereignty over history is precise.
Nothing in Revelation happens randomly.
Every judgment unfolds according to God’s perfect timing and purposes.
Even evil powers unknowingly serve God’s larger plan.
5) One-Third of Humanity Dies
The release of these demons results in unimaginable death:
one-third of mankind is killed.
Earlier judgments had already devastated the earth.
👉 Now the death toll reaches staggering levels.
Combined with previous judgments,
well over half the world’s population may now be dead.
Revelation shows that sin ultimately leads to destruction and death.
6) The Two Hundred Million Horsemen
John describes an army numbering:
two hundred million.
Whether symbolic of an unimaginably vast force or an exact number,
the point is overwhelming devastation.
👉 The imagery strongly suggests a supernatural demonic army.
The bizarre descriptions:
- lion-like heads
- fire and smoke
- serpent-like tails
- deadly mouths
indicate something far beyond ordinary human warfare.
John uses earthly comparisons to describe terrifying supernatural realities.
7) Fire, Smoke, and Brimstone
The horses unleash:
- fire
- smoke
- brimstone
👉 These images repeatedly connect to divine judgment and hell throughout Scripture.
The imagery recalls:
- Sodom and Gomorrah
- Old Testament judgments
- the final lake of fire
Revelation emphasizes that hell is not imaginary or symbolic fantasy.
It is a terrifying spiritual reality.
8) Humanity Still Refuses to Repent
Perhaps the most shocking part of the chapter comes in verses 20–21.
Despite catastrophic judgment,
the survivors:
“did not repent.”
👉 This reveals the terrifying hardness of sinful humanity.
People often think:
“If I just saw a miracle, I would believe.”
Revelation proves otherwise.
The problem is not lack of evidence.
The problem is sinful rebellion against God.
9) Demon Worship and Idolatry
John specifically says humanity continues worshiping:
- demons
- idols of gold
- silver
- stone
- wood
Scripture consistently connects false worship with demonic deception (Deuteronomy 32:17; 1 Corinthians 10:20).
👉 Idolatry is never spiritually neutral.
Humanity continually creates substitutes for God:
- money
- power
- sex
- self
- false religion
Revelation exposes the spiritual darkness behind idolatry.
10) Society Completely Unravels
John lists four sins dominating the world:
- murders
- sorceries
- immorality
- thefts
👉 Society collapses morally and spiritually.
The word translated “sorceries” is related to the Greek word behind “pharmacy” and often included occult practices and drug-related spiritual deception.
Revelation portrays a world completely consumed by:
- violence
- sexual immorality
- occult darkness
- crime
- rebellion against God
11) The Urgency of the Gospel
Revelation 9 reminds believers why the gospel matters so urgently.
👉 Humanity is not moving naturally toward moral improvement.
Apart from God’s grace,
the human heart moves deeper into rebellion and darkness.
Only Jesus Christ can rescue sinners from:
- judgment
- spiritual blindness
- Satan’s kingdom
- eternal destruction
Revelation calls people to repent now while mercy is still available.
- The sixth trumpet unleashes another demonic judgment upon humanity
- The four bound angels are released at God’s exact appointed time
- The Euphrates region carries strong biblical associations with rebellion and judgment
