How to Use This Commentary
Revelation 8:6–13 describes the first four trumpet judgments, where God begins devastating the earth’s environment during the Day of the Lord.
Read it in five movements: (1) the first trumpet against the land (v.7), (2) the second trumpet against the sea (vv.8–9), (3) the third trumpet against fresh water (vv.10–11), (4) the fourth trumpet against the heavens (v.12), and (5) the warning of greater judgment still to come (v.13).
Key: The creation humanity worshiped and abused becomes an instrument of God’s judgment against rebellion.
Humanity spends enormous energy trying to save the planet.
Climate fears.
Environmental activism.
Concerns about oceans,
food supplies,
and ecological collapse.
While caring for creation matters,
Revelation reminds us of something sobering:
the earth itself is temporary.
The same creation that displays God’s glory today will one day become an instrument of His judgment.
In Revelation 8,
God begins dismantling the stability of the natural world.
Land burns.
Oceans die.
Fresh water becomes poisoned.
The heavens grow dark.
👉 Creation itself becomes a witness against sinful humanity.
The world that rejected the Creator now experiences His righteous judgment.

Big idea: The first four trumpet judgments devastate the earth’s environment as God intensifies His wrath during the Tribulation.

A Simple Explanation (Revelation 8:6–13)
“Hail and fire…mixed with blood” (v.7)
The first trumpet devastates the land.
Meaning: Massive destruction consumes vegetation and trees.
Application: The earth belongs to God, not humanity.
“A great mountain burning with fire…” (vv.8–9)
The second trumpet strikes the sea.
Meaning: A catastrophic object crashes into the ocean causing widespread destruction.
Application: Human civilization is far more fragile than people realize.
“The star is called Wormwood” (vv.10–11)
Fresh water becomes poisoned.
Meaning: A third of the earth’s water supply turns bitter and deadly.
Application: God can remove the very resources humanity depends upon for life.
“A third of the sun…moon…and stars…” (v.12)
The heavens grow dark.
Meaning: God disrupts the normal order of creation.
Application: Even the universe itself remains under God’s authority.
“Woe, woe, woe…” (v.13)
An eagle warns of worse judgments ahead.
Meaning: The final trumpet judgments will be even more terrifying.
Application: God’s warnings are merciful opportunities to repent.
A Deeper Dive: Creation Under Judgment
1) The Trumpet Judgments Begin
Revelation 8 marks the beginning of the trumpet judgments.
The seven angels prepare themselves to sound their trumpets,
unleashing escalating waves of divine wrath.
👉 These judgments are not random natural disasters.
They are deliberate acts of divine judgment during the Day of the Lord.
The repeated use of “a third” throughout the chapter shows these judgments are severe,
but not yet final.
God is still giving opportunities for repentance.
2) The First Trumpet: Judgment on the Land
The first trumpet releases hail and fire mixed with blood upon the earth.
👉 One-third of the earth’s vegetation is destroyed.
Trees burn.
Grass burns.
Farmland becomes devastated.
Throughout Scripture,
hail and fire often accompany divine judgment (Exodus 9:23–25; Joel 2:30).
The destruction affects:
- food supplies
- livestock
- agriculture
- economic stability
- human survival
Humanity worshiped creation instead of the Creator (Romans 1:25),
and now creation itself becomes part of God’s judgment.
3) The Second Trumpet: Judgment on the Sea
John next sees something “like a great mountain burning with fire” thrown into the sea.
This likely describes a massive asteroid or meteorite striking the ocean.
👉 The impact devastates marine life and global commerce.
A third of the sea becomes blood,
a third of sea creatures die,
and a third of ships are destroyed.
The effects would be catastrophic:
- massive tsunamis
- economic collapse
- food shortages
- transportation disruption
- worldwide fear
Humanity depends heavily on the oceans for trade,
food,
and climate stability.
God demonstrates that He alone sustains the world.
4) The Third Trumpet: Judgment on Fresh Water
Another blazing object falls from heaven,
this time contaminating rivers and springs.
The star is named:
Wormwood.
In Scripture wormwood is associated with bitterness, poison, sorrow, and death (Jeremiah 9:15; Lamentations 3:15).
👉 Fresh drinking water becomes deadly.
This judgment is especially terrifying because humans cannot survive long without clean water.
Many die because the waters become poisoned.
Revelation emphasizes again that the judgments are targeted and purposeful,
not random accidents.
5) The Fourth Trumpet: Judgment on the Heavens
The fourth trumpet shifts from earth to the sky.
A third of the sun,
moon,
and stars are darkened.
👉 Light itself is diminished.
This partial darkness affects:
- temperature
- weather patterns
- agriculture
- human health
- daily life
The Old Testament prophets repeatedly associated cosmic darkness with the Day of the Lord (Isaiah 13:9–10; Joel 2:10; Amos 8:9).
Even the heavens testify that God’s judgment has arrived.
6) Creation Testifies Against Humanity
One major theme of Revelation 8 is that creation itself becomes a witness against sinful humanity.
👉 The world people trusted more than God becomes unstable and dangerous.
Humanity often lives as though:
- nature is ultimate
- science controls everything
- humanity is self-sufficient
- God is unnecessary
Revelation destroys those illusions.
The Creator still rules creation completely.
7) The Eagle’s Triple Warning
Before the final three trumpets sound,
John sees an eagle flying through heaven crying:
“Woe, woe, woe…”
👉 The worst judgments are still ahead.
The first four trumpets primarily impact the environment.
The next trumpet judgments will unleash even more direct suffering upon humanity.
Revelation carefully builds tension:
judgment is intensifying step by step.
8) Humanity Still Refuses to Repent
One of the most tragic truths in Revelation is that many people continue rejecting God despite overwhelming evidence of His power.
👉 Judgment alone does not automatically produce repentance.
Sin hardens the human heart.
Humanity’s greatest problem is not lack of information,
but rebellion against God.
Revelation exposes how desperately humanity needs the transforming grace of Christ.
9) Hope in the Middle of Judgment
Revelation 8 is terrifying,
but believers should notice something important:
God remains fully sovereign.
👉 Nothing is random.
History is not spiraling out of control.
The same God who judges evil is also the God who saves through Jesus Christ.
Revelation continually calls people to repentance before final judgment arrives.
