Revelation 1:1-8: The Focus of Revelation

How to Use This Commentary

Revelation 1:1–8 serves as the introduction to the entire book. It answers three foundational questions: (1) What is Revelation?, (2) Who is it about?, and (3) Why does it matter?

Read it in three movements: (1) the revelation explained (vv.1–3), (2) the greeting and identity of Christ (vv.4–6), and (3) the promise of His return (vv.7–8).

Key: Revelation is not mainly about events—it is about Jesus Christ revealed in glory.

Most people think Revelation is confusing—but God calls it a revelation.

The word means unveiling, not hiding (Revelation 1:1).

👉 This is not a puzzle to solve.
👉 This is truth God wants you to see.

And at the center of it all is not a timeline—
it is a Person.

👉 Revelation reveals Jesus Christ.

A Deeper Dive: The Revelation of Jesus Christ

1) Revelation Means Unveiling, Not Confusion

The word “revelation” (apokalupsis) means unveiling or making visible (Revelation 1:1).

👉 God is not hiding truth—He is revealing it.

This book is the climax of Scripture, showing how God’s story ends.

2) The Central Theme: Jesus Christ

Revelation is not primarily about events—it is about Jesus.

  • The faithful witness (Revelation 1:5)
  • The firstborn of the dead (Revelation 1:5)
  • The ruler of kings (Revelation 1:5)
  • The Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8)

👉 The Gospels show Christ in humility—Revelation shows Him in glory.

3) The Chain of Revelation

This message flows:

God → Jesus → Angel → John → Servants (Revelation 1:1–2)

👉 This is divine communication, not human speculation.

4) The Blessing and Responsibility

Revelation promises blessing to those who:

  • Read it
  • Hear it
  • Keep it (Revelation 1:3)

👉 This is not just information—it demands obedience.

5) A Trinitarian Greeting

Grace and peace come from:

  • The Father (eternal—Revelation 1:4)
  • The Spirit (fullness—Revelation 1:4)
  • The Son (redeemer—Revelation 1:5)

👉 The entire Trinity is involved in your salvation.

6) The Gospel in Revelation

Jesus:

  • Loves us (present reality)
  • Freed us by His blood (atonement)
  • Made us a kingdom and priests (identity)

👉 Revelation is deeply gospel-centered.

7) The Certainty of His Return

“He is coming” (Revelation 1:7) is present tense—emphasizing certainty.

Every eye will see Him, and all will respond—either in repentance or mourning.

8) The Sovereignty of God

God declares:

👉 “I am the Alpha and the Omega” (Revelation 1:8)

Meaning:

  • He controls history
  • He knows the future
  • He will accomplish His plan
Deeper Dive Summary:
  • Revelation reveals truth, not confusion
  • Jesus is the central focus
  • God communicates clearly to His people
  • The gospel anchors the message
  • Christ’s return is certain
  • God is sovereign over all history

Bottom Line (Revelation 1:1–8)

Revelation reveals Jesus Christ in His glory—He reigns now, saves completely, and will return with absolute certainty.
