How to Use This Commentary
Matthew 6:19–24 continues Jesus’ teaching on devotion to the Father, moving from spiritual practices (giving, prayer, fasting) to the deeper issue of the heart—what we truly treasure.
Read it in three movements: (1) treasure (what you value), (2) vision (how you see), and (3) master (who you serve).
Key: What you treasure shapes your heart, your vision, and your life.
Everyone is building a life around something.
Something you value…
something you pursue…
something you protect…
👉 That’s your treasure.
And Jesus says:
👉 Your treasure isn’t just what you have—it’s what has you.
This passage presses one question:
👉 What are you really living for?
A Quick Look: Matthew 6:19–24
Big idea: Jesus calls His followers to treasure what is eternal, see clearly through a God-centered perspective, and serve God alone.
Why this matters: What you value most will shape your heart, your decisions, and your direction in life.
Key truth: You cannot divide your loyalty between God and material things.
Bottom line: Where your treasure is determines your heart—and your master.
A Simple Explanation (Matthew 6:19–24)
“Do not lay up treasures on earth…” (v.19)
Jesus warns about temporary things.
Meaning: Earthly wealth is unstable and temporary.
Application: Don’t build your life on what won’t last.
“Lay up treasures in heaven…” (v.20)
Jesus redirects our focus.
Meaning: Invest in what is eternal.
Application: Live for what lasts forever.
“Where your treasure is…” (v.21)
Jesus reveals the connection.
Meaning: Your heart follows what you value.
Application: Your priorities reveal your heart.
“The eye is the lamp…” (v.22–23)
Jesus uses a picture.
Meaning: Your spiritual vision determines your direction.
Application: A healthy focus leads to a healthy life.
“You cannot serve two masters…” (v.24)
Jesus gives a final reality.
Meaning: You cannot divide ultimate loyalty.
Application: You must choose what rules your life.
Bridge: What you treasure shapes how you see—and ultimately who you serve.

A Deeper Dive: Treasure, Vision, and Master
1) The Core Issue: Materialism
Jesus confronts a deep human tendency:
👉 Living for things.
Insight: Materialism is not just having possessions—it is being controlled by them.
2) “Treasure” (θησαυρός)
The word refers to stored wealth or accumulated valuables.
Insight: The issue is not possession—but hoarding, trusting, and centering life around it.
3) Earthly Treasure Is Temporary
Jesus lists three threats:
- Moth → destroys clothing
- Rust (or decay) → consumes goods
- Thieves → steal possessions
👉 Everything on earth is vulnerable.
Insight: Even if you keep it in life—you lose it in death.
4) Heavenly Treasure Is Eternal
Treasure in heaven cannot be:
- Destroyed
- Corrupted
- Stolen
👉 It is secure forever.
Insight: Using earthly resources for eternal purposes transforms temporary wealth into eternal reward.
5) The Heart Follows the Treasure
Jesus does not say:
👉 “Where your heart is, your treasure follows.”
He says:
👉 “Where your treasure is, your heart will be.”
Insight: What you invest in shapes what you love.
6) The Eye: Spiritual Vision
The eye represents how you see life.
A “clear” (ἁπλοῦς) eye means:
- Single-minded devotion
- Generosity
- God-centered focus
A “bad” eye means:
- Greed
- Selfishness
- Material obsession
Insight: How you view money reveals your spiritual condition.
7) Light vs Darkness
If your vision is clear:
👉 Your life is filled with light.
If your vision is distorted:
👉 Your life is filled with darkness.
Insight: Self-deception is possible—thinking you see clearly while living in darkness.
8) The Ultimate Issue: Mastery
Jesus brings everything to a climax:
👉 “No one can serve two masters.”
The word “serve” refers to slavery.
Insight: This is not about preference—it is about ownership.
9) God vs Mammon
Mammon refers to wealth, possessions, and material security.
Insight: Money is not neutral—it competes for lordship.
10) The Impossibility of Dual Loyalty
Jesus says:
- You will love one and hate the other
- You will be devoted to one and despise the other
👉 There is no middle ground.
Insight: Divided allegiance is impossible in the Kingdom.
11) The Gospel Connection
This passage exposes the heart:
👉 We are naturally drawn to security in things.
But Jesus:
- Left heavenly riches for our sake
- Lived without clinging to earthly wealth
- Gave His life fully to the Father
Through Him:
- Our misplaced treasures are forgiven
- Our hearts are redirected
- Our lives are reoriented toward eternity
👉 He becomes our true treasure.
- Materialism is a heart issue, not just a financial one
- Earthly treasure is temporary; heavenly treasure is eternal
- Your heart follows what you invest in
- Your vision determines your spiritual condition
- You cannot serve both God and money
- Jesus redirects our hearts to eternal treasure
Bottom Line (Matthew 6:19–24)
What you treasure determines your heart, your vision, and your master—so store up what lasts and give your life fully to God.
