How to Use This Commentary
Matthew 6:25–30 builds directly on Jesus’ teaching about treasure and master. After addressing what we value, Jesus now addresses what we worry about.
Read it in three movements: (1) the command not to worry, (2) the example of God’s provision, and (3) the exposure of little faith.
Key: Worry reveals what we trust—and what we don’t.
Worry feels natural—but Jesus calls it a problem.
What will I eat?
What will I wear?
What if something goes wrong?
👉 These feel like normal questions.
But Jesus says:
👉 Worry isn’t just emotional—it’s theological.
It reveals what you believe about:
- God’s care
- God’s control
- God’s provision
A Quick Look: Matthew 6:25–30
Big idea: Jesus commands His followers not to worry because the Father faithfully provides for their needs.
Why this matters: Worry reveals a lack of trust in God’s care and provision.
Key truth: If God provides for birds and flowers, He will certainly provide for His children.
Bottom line: Worry is replaced not by control, but by trust in the Father.
A Simple Explanation (Matthew 6:25–30)
“Do not be anxious…” (v.25)
Jesus gives a command.
Meaning: Worry is not neutral—it is something to stop.
Application: Don’t let anxiety control your thinking.
“Is not life more…?”
Jesus gives perspective.
Meaning: Life is more than physical needs.
Application: Don’t reduce life to survival.
“Look at the birds…” (v.26)
Jesus gives an example.
Meaning: God feeds even the smallest creatures.
Application: Trust God’s care for you.
“Can you add…?” (v.27)
Jesus exposes the problem.
Meaning: Worry accomplishes nothing.
Application: Anxiety doesn’t fix anything.
“Consider the lilies…” (v.28–29)
Jesus gives another example.
Meaning: God beautifully provides without effort.
Application: Trust God’s provision, not your striving.
“O you of little faith…” (v.30)
Jesus reveals the root issue.
Meaning: Worry is connected to weak faith.
Application: Grow in trust, not fear.
Bridge: If God is your Master (6:24), then worry contradicts your trust in Him.

Where Is Your Treasure?
A Deeper Dive: Worry and the Father’s Care
1) “For This Reason” — The Connection to Treasure
Jesus begins with “for this reason.”
👉 This connects directly to 6:24:
If God is your Master, you do not need to worry.
Insight: Worry is a loyalty issue—it reveals competing masters.
2) The Nature of Worry (μεριμνάω)
The Greek word means “to be divided” or “pulled apart.”
👉 Worry divides the mind.
Insight: Worry fractures trust in God and replaces it with fear.
3) Worry Is a Sin, Not Just a Struggle
Jesus commands us not to worry.
Insight: Worry is distrust in God’s character, promises, and provision.
4) Life Is More Than Survival
Jesus asks:
👉 “Is not life more than food?”
Insight: When life is reduced to physical needs, worry becomes inevitable.
5) The Birds: God’s Provision
Birds:
- Do not farm
- Do not store wealth
- Do not worry
👉 Yet God feeds them.
Insight: God provides through means—but without worry.
6) “Are You Not Worth More?”
Jesus argues from lesser to greater:
👉 If God feeds birds, He will care for you.
Insight: Your value is rooted in being God’s child—not your circumstances.
7) Worry Is Useless
Jesus asks:
👉 “Can you add a single hour to your life?”
Insight: Worry produces zero spiritual or practical benefit.
8) The Flowers: God’s Beauty
Flowers:
- Do not work for beauty
- Do not design themselves
- Do not strive
👉 Yet God clothes them magnificently.
Insight: God’s provision includes beauty, not just survival.
9) Solomon vs the Lilies
Jesus compares:
👉 The richest king vs wildflowers
Insight: God’s natural provision surpasses human achievement.
10) Temporary vs Eternal
Grass:
- Here today
- Gone tomorrow
👉 Yet God still cares for it.
Insight: If God cares for temporary things, He will care for eternal people.
11) “O You of Little Faith”
Jesus diagnoses the issue:
👉 Not no faith—but little faith.
Insight: Worry is not absence of belief—it is weakness of trust.
12) The Gospel Connection
This passage points us to Christ:
- He trusted the Father perfectly
- He lived without anxious control
- He depended fully on God
Through Him:
- Your anxious heart is forgiven
- Your trust is strengthened
- Your life is anchored in the Father
👉 The solution to worry is not control—it is knowing your Father.
- Worry flows from misplaced trust
- God provides for all creation
- You are more valuable than what God already sustains
- Worry accomplishes nothing
- Worry reveals weak faith
- Trust grows by knowing the Father
Bottom Line (Matthew 6:25–30)
Worry fades when you trust your Father—because the God who feeds birds and clothes flowers will faithfully provide for you.
