“He required everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name.”
— Revelation 13:16–17 (NLT)
A Global System of Control
Revelation 13 describes a coming time when the Antichrist will dominate the world’s economy. He will control global supply and demand, deciding who can buy or sell. This future economic dictatorship centers around a mysterious number—666, also called the mark of the beast.
But what exactly is this mark?
According to Scripture, the mark will be a literal, visible identifier—a brand, tattoo, or digital imprint—placed “on the right hand or the forehead” of every person living during the Tribulation. It will function as a pledge of allegiance to the Antichrist and a passport for participation in the world economy. Those without the mark will be cut off from commerce and society.
Why 666?
The Bible doesn’t leave the meaning of the numbers entirely unexplained. Revelation 13:18 calls it “the number of man.”
In Scripture, the number seven represents perfection and completeness. The repetition of six, falling just short of seven, symbolizes human imperfection and rebellion against God. The triple repetition—666—intensifies the idea of humanity’s attempt to imitate and replace God, yet falling miserably short.
As Bible scholar John Walvoord observed, if seven symbolizes God’s perfection, then the Antichrist—claiming to be divine—should be “777.” Instead, Revelation declares him to be “666,” forever short of deity and incapable of matching God’s holiness or sovereignty.
In short, 666 is the number of man exalting himself as God—and failing.

Literal, Symbolic, or Both?
Some interpreters view 666 symbolically, representing mankind’s ultimate rebellion. Others believe it will also have a literal application—a numerical value connected to the Antichrist’s name. In the ancient world, letters often represented numbers (a practice known as gematria), so his name could literally total 666. I believe this to be a real possibility, as do many others.
If the Lord has revealed that the Antichrist’s name will total 666, it is an act of mercy and grace because when combined with the other prophecies of this man, his identity to believers will be evident. Yet, this number of warning and grace has led many to speculate that some of their contemporaries were, or are, the Antichrist after concluding that their names total 666. Nero Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolf Hitler, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, the Papacy, and most surprisingly – Jesus – all have been or are seen as the Antichrist.

Whatever the exact form, the mark will identify total allegiance to the Antichrist. It will declare that the bearer belongs to him, body and soul. Scripture warns that those who receive the mark will face eternal judgment (Revelation 14:9–10). Taking it will not be accidental—it will be a conscious, willing act of worship and loyalty to Satan’s counterfeit Christ.
Not Here. Not Yet.
It’s vital to understand that nothing in today’s world is the mark of the beast.
No current technology—whether microchips, biometric scans, or digital IDs—meets the biblical criteria, though it may be laying the foundation for the future mark and system. The mark of the beast will not appear until:
- The rapture has taken place (if you do not hold the rapture as doctrine, the last two will still need to occur before the mark is instituted),
- The Antichrist has been revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4; Revelation 13:1-11), and
- The Tribulation period has reached its midpoint (Daniel 9:26-27).
No one alive today can “accidentally” receive this mark. When it comes, it will be clear, deliberate, and openly tied to the worship of the Antichrist.
The Choice That Defines Eternity
During the Tribulation, the mark will serve as a test of allegiance—to Christ or to the Antichrist. Accepting the mark will bring temporary survival but eternal loss. Refusing it may bring persecution or death, but leads to eternal life with God.
This sobering truth reminds believers today that our loyalty to Christ is already being tested—not by a physical mark, but by the daily choices we make about who we trust, worship, and follow.

Reflection
The mark of the beast represents more than a number—it’s a mirror reflecting the heart’s allegiance. Even now, the question remains for every generation:
Whose mark will you bear—the mark of man or the image of God?
