This Set’s Big Idea
The risen Jesus restores His followers, sends them to make disciples, empowers them through the Holy Spirit, and forms them into a devoted, witnessing community.
As you read, watch how Jesus restores Peter, commissions His disciples to go to all nations, promises the Spirit’s power, ascends to the Father, pours out the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and gathers believers into a church devoted to His Word, fellowship, prayer, generosity, and mission.
These notes correspond with Set 24 readings in The Gospels Discipleship Journal. First, use MTSM’s Pray, Read, Ask, and Pray method to study the passage devotionally. After you finish, use these notes to deepen your understanding if you’d like.
This final set shows what happens after the resurrection. In John 21, Jesus meets Peter after his failure and asks him three times, “Do you love Me?” Jesus does not ignore Peter’s denial, but neither does He discard him. He restores Peter and gives him a renewed calling to care for His people and faithfully follow Him.
In Matthew 28, the risen Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him. On the basis of that authority, He sends His disciples to make disciples of all nations by going, baptizing, and teaching people to obey everything He commanded. The mission belongs to Jesus, and His followers carry it out with the assurance of His continuing presence.
As you read Acts 1, pay attention to the disciples’ dependence. Jesus does not send them into the world in their own strength. He tells them to wait for the Holy Spirit, who will empower them to become His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. After Jesus ascends, the disciples respond with prayerful obedience as they wait for what He promised.
Acts 2 records the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Spirit fills the believers, empowers their witness, and enables people from many nations to hear the good news. Peter boldly proclaims that the crucified Jesus has been raised and exalted as Lord and Messiah. Those who respond in repentance and faith are baptized and welcomed into the new community Jesus is building.
This set ends with a picture of the early church devoted to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, shared meals, prayer, generosity, worship, and witness. The Gospel story does not end with the disciples looking toward heaven. It continues through Spirit-empowered believers who follow Jesus together and make Him known.
These passages invite us to receive Christ’s restoration, embrace His mission, depend on the Holy Spirit, devote ourselves to life with God’s people, and become disciples who make disciples.
