6.26.25 – The Hidden Practice of Fasting

This devotion is based on the sermon: Not for Likes

Devotional

Fasting is meant to be a deeply personal spiritual discipline between you and God. Yet how often do we feel compelled to let others know about our spiritual sacrifices? Jesus teaches that true fasting should be so private that others don’t even notice we’re doing it. This isn’t about hiding our faith, but about maintaining pure motives in our spiritual practices. When we fast without announcing it, we protect the sacred nature of this spiritual discipline and keep our focus where it belongs – on deepening our relationship with God.

Bible Verse

“But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:17-18

Reflection Question

How can you practice spiritual disciplines in a way that keeps the focus on your relationship with God rather than on others’ perceptions?

Prayer

Father, help me to seek You in the secret place, finding joy in Your presence rather than others’ recognition. Amen.
