Remember crossing your fingers behind your back as a kid to “cancel” a promise? As adults, we may no longer play that game, but we sometimes find grown-up versions—loopholes in our commitments that let us seem honest while quietly planning to back out.
In Jesus’ time, religious leaders had mastered this. They created a system where swearing “by the temple” didn’t count, but swearing “by the gold of the temple” did. It was a clever way to seem faithful without actually being trustworthy. But Jesus wasn’t fooled. He reminded them—and us—that everything belongs to God. There are no “less serious” promises. All our words matter.
Integrity doesn’t mean sounding spiritual. It means saying what you mean and following through, even when it costs you. Jesus calls us to speak simply and truthfully—without loopholes, excuses, or fine print.

And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding. 19 How blind! For which is more important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 When you swear ‘by the altar,’ you are swearing by it and by everything on it. 21 And when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it. 22 And when you swear ‘by heaven,’ you are swearing by the throne of God and by God, who sits on the throne. – Matthew 23:18-22

What “loopholes” might you be using in your communication with others that allow you to technically keep your word while violating the spirit of your promises?

Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I’ve sought ways to avoid honesty. Help me speak with integrity in every area of life, knowing that You hear every word. Let my yes be yes, and my no be no—for Your glory. Amen.
