5 Biblical Ways to Honor the Mother Figures in Your Life

This blog post summarizes the sermon: Honoring Mom in ways God Desires

Pastor’s Sermon Notes

Our relationship with mother figures – whether biological mothers, stepmothers, spiritual mothers, or mother-in-laws – should reflect God’s heart and bring honor to Him. Here are five practical ways to honor the mothers in your life in a way that pleases God.

Why Is Having Greater Affection for God Essential?

We must have a greater affection for God than ourselves.

The foundation for properly honoring mother figures starts with having a greater affection for God than for ourselves. When we love God supremely, we become willing to forgive sins committed against us, humbly ask for forgiveness, and serve even when it’s difficult.

This principle is reinforced throughout Scripture, from Exodus 20:12’s command to “honor your father and mother” to Jesus’ words in John 14:15: “If you love me, obey my commands.”

How Can We Serve Mother Figures Through Actions?

We must do acts of service.

Jesus modeled sacrificial service even while suffering on the cross, ensuring His mother’s needs would be met by entrusting her care to John. We must follow His example through practical acts of service like:

  • Helping with household tasks
  • Assisting with childcare
  • Providing transportation to appointments
  • Offering presence and encouragement during illness
  • Creating emergency planning documents

What Role Do Words of Affirmation Play?

Speak words of affirmation.

Speaking words that build up rather than tear down is crucial. Proverbs 31:28-31 shows children blessing their mothers and husbands praising their wives. Practice:

  • Expressing genuine gratitude
  • Offering specific encouragement
  • Writing thoughtful notes
  • Praying together or sharing written prayers
  • Speaking respectfully about them to others

Why Is Giving Attention So Important?

Give the gift of attention.

Quality time and focused attention communicate value. This means:

  • Putting away phones and eliminating distractions
  • Making eye contact
  • Listening actively without trying to “fix” everything
  • Being fully present in conversationsCreating dedicated time together

How Do We Teach Children to Honor Their Mother?

Teach our children to adore their mothers.

Children learn primarily through observation. We must:

  • Model respectful treatment
  • Demonstrate gratitude openlyInclude children in acts of service
  • Share positive memories and stories
  • Teach appropriate ways to show appreciation

Life Application

This week, choose one specific way to honor the mother figures in your life tangibly.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I prioritizing God’s commands over my own comfort?
  • What practical act of service can I perform this week?
  • How can I better demonstrate attention and appreciation?
  • What words of affirmation have I been withholding?
  • How am I modeling honor for the next generation?

Remember, honoring mothers isn’t just for Mother’s Day – it’s a daily calling that reflects our love for God and obedience to His commands.
