This blog post summarizes the sermon: What are we to do with the Old Testament? (Pt 1)
Devotional
Have you ever wondered why God gave us His law? Many people view God’s commands as restrictive rules meant to limit our freedom. However, God’s law serves a much deeper purpose – to reveal His character and point us to our need for a Savior. The law shows us God’s perfect standard of holiness and helps us recognize how far we fall short on our own. Rather than being a burden, the law is a gift leading us to Christ.
Bible Verse
“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets, but to accomplish their purpose.” – Matthew 5:17
Reflection Question
How does viewing God’s law as a gift that reveals His character, rather than just a set of rules, change your perspective on following His commands?
Sermon Quote
The law of Moses is not simply the 10 Commandments that we are so familiar with; it includes these books, the instructions found in Exodus and Leviticus reiterated in Deuteronomy, including the blessing and cursing chapter of Deuteronomy, chapter 28.
Prayer
Father, help me see Your law as a reflection of Your holy character rather than just a list of dos and don’ts. Give me wisdom to understand its true purpose in pointing me to Christ. Amen.
