What Does “Almighty” mean in Revelation 1:8?

Revelation 1:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”

In the Book of Revelation, John refers to God as the “Almighty One” nine times (1:8; 4:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7, 14; 19:6, 15; 21:22). This title appears only one other time in the New Testament, in 2 Corinthians 6:18, by Paul.

And I will be your Father,

and you will be my sons and daughters,

    says the Lord Almighty.

The reference to “Almighty” in Revelation 1:8 may specifically refer to Jesus. Some red-letter editions of the Bible, like the NASB, ESV, or NKJV, highlight these words in red, signifying Jesus spoke them. The verse clearly affirms Christ’s full deity if this interpretation is correct.

The term “Almighty” is translated from the Greek word pantokrator, which combines pantos (“all” or “everything”) and krator (“to hold”). Together, it conveys that the Triune God, including Jesus Christ, holds everything in His hands or has authority over all things (Colossians 1:17). This truth emphasizes the comprehensive sovereignty of Christ—He governs every planet, star, king, kingdom, church, and individual, including you and me. This fact should calm our minds and hearts daily as we face difficulties and hear about turmoil near and far.
