Dress Up

Do Together

Go through each other’s closets and create silly outfits for everyone to wear. If you have old Halloween costumes or costumes for dress up, this would be a good opportunity to use them as well. Turn on some music and have a fun fashion show where each person models their outfit. After the show, share which outfit was your favorite and why. Then, discuss the kind of “clothes” God tells His children to put on. Together, read Colossians 3:12-14.

*If you have older children who might be too old to play dress up, perhaps you could use this Faith Talk after shopping for clothes over a meal at home our out.

Talk Together

After reading Colossians 3:12-14 ask your family the following questions to guide your conversation with one another.

Younger Children

  • Are there any words in these verses that you don’t understand?
  • What does Paul, the writer of this letter, tell God’s dearly loved children to put on?
  • What does that mean? What would it look like for someone to “wear” each of these virtues?
  • Which of these things is the hardest for you to put on? Why?
  • Who are the people in your life that are the hardest for you to love the way Scripture teaches?
  • What can you do when you fail to treat others the way this passage tells you to?

Older Children / Teens

  • What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming school year? What are you most dreading about the school year?
  • What brands of clothing are popular among your friends and other kids at school?
  • What is your favorite item you got today?
  • Did you know that God has certain things He wants us to wear? (Allow for time for your child to respond. Then say, “We can see what God desires us to wear in Colossians 3:12-15, let’s look at what it says together.”)

Pray Together

Spend time praying for each other and for the relationships God has placed in your lives. Ask for God’s forgiveness where you’ve failed to treat others as He commands and seek His help to love others as He loves you. Ask for God’s forgiveness where you’ve fallen short and seek His help to love others as He loves you.

Memorize Together

Memorizing Colossians 3:13 or Matthew 7:12 as a family during the week or month would be appropriate after this Faith Talk. Both verses help guide our relationships with others inside and outside our home. If you have younger children, think about having them memorize part of one of the verses instead of the entire thing.

For example,

Matthew 7:12 – Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you…

and for

Colossians 3:13 –  …Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
