This week, we continue our focus on theology proper, which is simply the study of God Himself. Our passage of focus this week is Psalm 139. At the time of this recording, many in our church family are experiencing major life crises, facing challenges, difficult times, and hard decisions. Often, this can feel overwhelming. As we begin our time together, I pray this post will be a blessing, encouragement, comfort, and growth. Due to our church family’s current stage and experiences, this is a timely study.
In Psalm 139, David writes about three attributes of God: omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence. These attributes are revealed through David’s personal experiences with God. Although we don’t know the exact timing or events surrounding David’s reason for writing Psalm 139, we see that he is facing a hardship, a crushing and overwhelming situation towards the end of the chapter. As David reflects upon these attributes of God, he turns to worship and submission.
Before we dive in, let’s take a moment to pray. “Father God, I thank you for another day. Lord, I thank you for the privilege of being a vessel for your use. I pray that as your people listen to your word, it will be a source of encouragement, comfort, and strength. Help us face the storms of life and refine us as your people. In Christ’s name, we pray, Amen.”
Understanding God’s Omniscience
Psalm 139 begins with David acknowledging God’s omniscience. God is all-knowing. David writes, “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.” The Hebrew word for “know” here is “yada,” which implies intimate knowledge. God knows us intimately, understanding our thoughts and motivations even when we are far away. This intimate knowledge is a source of comfort and awe for David.
Think about the depth of this truth: God’s knowledge is not superficial or distant. He knows us more profoundly than we know ourselves. Our anxieties, dreams, innermost secrets, and silent struggles—none of these are hidden from Him. This profound understanding should be a wellspring of solace, particularly during times of uncertainty and distress. When we grapple with our inadequacies or feel misunderstood by those around us, we can lean on the assurance that God knows us completely and loves us unconditionally.
The omniscience of God challenges us to live authentically. Since nothing is hidden from God, we are invited to live with integrity and transparency. It is a call to honesty in our relationship with Him, knowing we cannot deceive or hide our true selves. This awareness should not lead to fear but to a deeper sense of security, knowing that we are fully known and fully loved by our Creator.
Embracing God’s Omnipresence
David then turns to God’s omnipresence, acknowledging that God is everywhere at all times. In verse 7, David writes, “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!” This truth is comforting because it means that God is with us in every situation, whether on the mountaintop or in the valley. God is present in our lives, providing guidance and support.
In today’s fast-paced world, where isolation and loneliness can often creep in despite our hyper-connected society, the omnipresence of God serves as a profound reminder: We are never alone. Whether we find ourselves in a bustling city, in the quiet of nature, or in the solitude of our own thoughts, God is there. His presence is constant and unwavering, offering comfort and companionship.
This divine presence also serves as a source of strength and courage. Knowing that God is with us enables us to face life’s challenges with a renewed sense of hope and determination. We can confidently walk through the darkest valleys, knowing that His presence is our guiding light. His Spirit is our constant companion, empowering us to persevere and overcome obstacles.
Moreover, God’s omnipresence encourages us to seek Him in every moment of our lives. We are invited to cultivate an awareness of His presence, turn to Him in prayer and reflection, and seek His guidance in our daily decisions. This awareness transforms mundane moments into sacred encounters as we recognize that God is actively involved in every aspect of our lives.
My prayer for each of you is that though you know God is present with you, He will make His presence felt by you.
Recognizing God’s Omnipotence
Finally, David reflects on God’s omnipotence, His all-powerful nature. In verses 13-18, David marvels at the intricacy of God’s creation, particularly in the formation of his own body. “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.” This acknowledgment of God’s creative power leads David to worship and gratitude.
God’s omnipotence is a testament to His infinite power and capability. It reminds us that nothing is too difficult for Him. Since He brought order from chaos when He created the world, He can now bring order out of our chaotic worlds. When we face situations that seem insurmountable, we can take solace in the fact that God is in control. His power is not limited by human constraints or circumstances. He is the Creator of the universe, and His power is limitless.
This attribute of God invites us to trust in His sovereignty. We can surrender our fears and worries to Him, knowing He can handle any situation. His power is a source of hope, especially when we feel powerless or overwhelmed. We can approach Him confidently, knowing that He can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
Moreover, God’s omnipotence inspires us to live boldly and with faith. We are called to step out in obedience, trusting that His power is at work within us. We can pursue the dreams and purposes He has placed in our hearts, knowing that He can accomplish all He has promised.
Facing Life’s Crises with God’s Attributes
In verses 19-22, David addresses his crisis, calling on God to deal with the wicked. Despite the threat, David finds solace in God’s attributes. He knows that God is aware of his situation, present with him, and powerful enough to deliver him.
In times of crisis, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless. Yet, David’s response serves as a model for us. Instead of succumbing to fear or despair, he turns to God, anchoring his hope in His unchanging attributes. He recognizes that God’s knowledge, presence, and power are more than enough to sustain him through any trial.
As we face our challenges, let us take comfort in the fact that we serve a God who is intimately involved in our lives. He sees our struggles, understands our fears, and walks with us through every storm. We can find peace in knowing that we are not alone and that His power is at work on our behalf.
A Prayer of Surrender
David concludes Psalm 139 with a prayer of surrender. He asks God to search his heart, test his thoughts, and lead him along the path of everlasting life. David’s understanding of God’s attributes leads him to trust and surrender to the infinite God who intimately cares for him.
As we close this week, I pray that understanding God’s omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence will lift your spirits and encourage you in whatever crisis you may be facing. May we be in awe of who God is, trusting in His presence and power in our lives. Until next week, church family, stay blessed.
Remember that surrender is not a one-time act but a daily posture of the heart. It is an invitation to trust in God’s wisdom and guidance, even when the path ahead is uncertain. As we open our hearts to Him, He leads us in ways everlasting, guiding us with His love and grace.
May we live with the assurance that the Almighty God fully knows us, constantly accompanies us, and empowers us. Let us embrace His attributes, allowing them to shape our lives and lead us into the fullness of His purpose and calling.
